buying a new phone on a prepaid account
My son has a prepaid account that I don't want to mess with, but he needs a new phone. Will he be able to set up a new phone on his current account?

Yes. He can use any compatible phone on prepaid.

All he has to do is acquire phone and move the SIM card from his old phone into the new one. Unless the SIM cards are different sized you will not need any assistance from AT&T. Please be cautious when purchasing a phone if you are not purchasing one that is AT&T branded.
There are many phones out there that are not going to be voice over LTE compatible.
Stick to this list, model numbers matter
