We would love to have you as a part of AT&T PREPAID, Sandrak500. Here's how to keep your number when transferring to AT&T.
As @sandblaster shared, when it comes to transferring over to our AT&T wireless service, you can do so online, as activating the PREPAID SIM card without porting your number first will assign you a new number.
First, you will want to make sure your number is eligible to transfer. If so, you’ll have to provide the following details to start the transfer process:
Contact your service provider so you know what charges may apply. You'll have to pay any outstanding balances. You can find this information and more under Confirm transfer eligibility when you visit Transfer a number to AT&T Prepaid.
View the details under Start the transfer process and Check number transfer status. Each section contains important information when beginning the transfer process. We take care of the process so don't cancel your current service!
Also, a temporary number is a phone number without a physical SIM card that is different from your regular phone number and is used for AT&T online verification.
Reach back out to us and let us know how this helped and if you still need assistance.
Thank you for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums.

You need to port your number. If you activate the prepaid SIM card without porting the number, it will be assigned a new number. You can start the port process online.
