Upgrading a M1 nighthawk to a M6 Pro, But the system wont let me. Please Advise!
I have a ATT Unlimited Plus Grandfather plan. Under that Plan, AT&T explicitly granted it 5g and 5g+ per their press release HERE. I have two M1 Nighthawks on my account both on the grandfathered plan and with unlimited data. Recently ATT has released their Nighthawk M6 Pro. However, I am unable to upgrade my existing hotspot lines to the new M6 Pro. They will allow me to upgrade the device to a top-of-the-line iPhone 13 or any other flagship phone but not an in-place upgrade from one Nighthawk to the next.
Please note that the latest AT&T plans do not have unlimited data for hotspots and are thoroughly unattractive to me due to data overages that would happen after the hard limit they place on the hotspots (Makes no sense to have multi gigabit-speed if you use it up in under 5 minutes).
Steps I have taken:
1. I called ATT Wireless to attempt to do an over-the-phone upgrade with an agent. They were unsuccessful and stated that they cannot upgrade the device due to it being part of a multi-line account. I have never heard of this restriction as I had no issue upgrading phones on the line that was available to upgrade.
2. Attempted to use the online portal and was unable to select the M6 or M6pro from the available upgrades (but they will let me upgrade to a spark)
3. Attempted a in-store upgrade but due to them lacking the hotspot (it's new) they advised me to call. See point 1.

You are on the only grandfathered unlimited plan that allowed adding hotspot devices. ATT may have extended 5G to phones or tablets on your plan but not to hotspot devices. ATT would rather get you off that plan. Bottom line, if you want to keep that unlimited data on those hotspots, you need to keep using your M1’s. ATT just won’t let you upgrade to 5G hotspot devices. If either of your M1’s just flat out fail, they might not even let you replace with another M1.

The upgrade assistant will allow me to upgrade to another m1 or spark. At least If my m1 fails I can at least replace it in kind.
If there is a way to upgrade to the new M6 while retaining my present plan I would love to know!

Let us help shed some light on why you've been unable to upgrade your Nighthawk Device, @James_Mccorn.
The technology of these devices is different and they don't fall in the same family. The MR1100 is a HSPA+ 4G device and the M6 is a 5G device. Your Grandfathered plan does not support the upgrade, which is why the system won't allow it.
As @sandblaster mentioned, only select plans support your hotspot router device. To upgrade, you'll need to select a currently offered data plan for the Netgear Nighthawk M6.
Find out how to change older smartphone data plans and avoid reduced data speeds.

Hi ATT Help,
Thank you for shedding some light on the situation.
I see that according to your information the M1 is a 4g device and that the m5 and M6 are 5g devices. I also see that in the information you have that I will not be able to upgrade using AT&T financing.
I find it sad that ATT has a different policy regarding plans that are 5g but happened to be grandfathered and plans that are 5g and current. As the current plans are an absolute disaster for hotspots (which I presume must be by design).
I hope that this feedback is shared with the team.
