Trouble unlocking subsidized device?

Hi all,

I've been trying to unlock my phone (which does not have an installment plan), but no luck so far. After contacting customer service, I received a message saying:

Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your AT&T mobile device. We cannot complete your request for one of the following reasons:

  • If you are under contract you must complete the contract period before your device can be unlocked.
  • If you paid full price for your AT&T device and are a postpaid customer you must have at least 60 days of service with AT&T.

The subject line of the email was "Subsidy Device Unlock Request." Since my phone purchase was subsidized by my previous employer, I thought this might be causing the issue? I have been with AT&T for over 60 days and also am on the AT&T Unlimited Starter plan. Any advice? Thanks!

Let's help get your device unlocked, !

As our ACEs mentioned, you'll want to get in contact with your employer and have them submit a device unlock request for your phone. Use the Forums to learn more about Device Unlock. Below, you'll see general requirements for all unlock request.

  • The device must be designed for use on, and locked to, the AT&T wireless network.
  • It must not be reported lost or stolen.
  • It’s not associated with fraudulent activity.
  • All the device’s service commitments and installment plans are completed, and all early termination fees are paid in full.
  • The device is not currently active on a different AT&T customer’s account.
  • If you performed an early upgrade, you must wait the 14-day buyer’s remorse period before you can request to unlock your previous device.
  • Visit our Unlock Support page for the full requirement list

If you have additional questions, please let us know!

We hope this helps get your phone unlocked!

If the phone was purchased by business, you're going to have to contact the previous owner and have them unlock the phone.

It is my experience that phones purchased by businesses are forever connected to that business, and cannot be unlocked unless the business requests it.

Okay, so even if I purchased it through work with a subsidy, I need to reach out to them to get it unlocked? (The account has since been transferred from my employer to me.)
