Trade in eligibility -Used phone still on original owner's installment plan

Hello, I have an AT&T wireless family plan account and no active installment plans on any of the phones. I purchased my phone used over a year ago. The phone is locked. When I try to unlock it, it says that it is on an installment plan (not my installment plan though, it is on the original owner's plan).

I would like to upgrade my plan today and trade in all of the current phones (including the ones that I cannot unlock due to being on the original owner's installment plan).  If I trade in my current phones, will I still be eligible for the trade in credit? A few of my phones are showing that I can get a few hundred dollars if I trade them in. I don't want to get stuck with the full price of new phones if I'm not permitted to get the credits.

To recap:

  • I don't have any phones on installment plans
  • A few of the phones that I do have are on the original owners' installment plans.
  • I would to see if I can trade in these phones and get the trade in credits toward the new phones.

@bfreer ATT doesn't let you see how much is owed on a phone belonging to another account.  Privacy, etc.

If you try to trade in a phone that's on someone else's account and still has an installment , it will be rejected and you won't get the promotion.

Find a different phone to trade in.

The trade-in deal has arrow points at the bottom of the sales page which list all the phones that are eligible for trade-in and for how much $

Read carefully and make sure you do your purchase and trade in at an AT&T store. Every effort to avoid mailing in your phone should be made!

Interesting. I just called AT&T and the employee told me that the installment would have no impact and that I'd get the full trade in credit....

Hi there! We understand the importance of getting the device unlocked.

Thank you for the relevant information @ace.

We want to inform that, AT&T can unlock the devices that are purchased from AT&T. If you're not the original account holder, please ask the original account holder to contact us, so that we can check the account information and help with unlocking the device.

We will be happy to help you forward.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Community & Forums,

Susan, AT&T Community Specialist
