Phone upgrade and contract renewal

My 5c broke and I was given and old phone to use. I am on a family plan and past due for an upgrade. However, my dad is adamant that doing so means we have to renew our contract which he doesn't want to do, so I'm stuck with this crappy phone. Is what he says true??

He is incorrect only because ATT does not use contracts and has not since 1/8/16.

However, buying a new phone will increase the bill as phones are sold at retail cost.  What you can do is save your money and buy the iPhone SE off the prepaid rack at ATT or Best Buy for about $250.  This is a no contract, no plan purchase which will not increase your dads bill.

Note, a phone purchase increases the bill only if you buy it on an installment plan. You can pay for the phone in full up front. Either way, there is no 2 year service contract.

@thatGal24 But if you buy a phone on Next (which is no interest payments) many incorrect think that is a contract, it's just an arrangement to promise to pay that phone off.

You can leave AT&T at anytime but you still owe for that phone.
