Not sure if the text I just got from AT&T was a scam or not?

Today I received a text from the number 11112025 that said the following:

Hi, it's AT&T. Great news! You've paid off your phone. If you're interested in learning about our upgrade offer on the new iPhone, reply YES to receive details.

Not sure whether or not this is a scam text, and I don't want to reply without checking here first.

Hi I received a text message from 11112025 identifying themselves as AT&T. I did not purchase a phone so that was a red flag, also the format was odd. However I have growing concerns. What is the plan to stop these tricks?

This is very similar to the root issues shared here:

I just got the same text.  Ignore and delete.

There is no way for legit companies to stop spam texts.  It’s so bad that FTC has published warnings. https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages

Shoutout to everyone who can remember their childhood phone number but can't remember the password they created yesterday.  You are my people.  😊

Did you just complete paying off a phone? Probably not a scam but I still wouldn’t reply. All the information about upgrades is available at att.com.

It's a scam. I received the same text today, only we've never had phones on installment plans. We always purchase ours outright.

I got the same one..I don't understand..I have 3 phones on the account..2 are paid for and my bill remains the same..shouldn't it be reduced by 2/3 of the installments for the phones now paid??

@OttoPylot So what’s the scam? Do you get scam hyperlinks if you reply “yes”?

I got it and I’ve never had payments on a phone…. “You've paid off your phone” ….so we can assume that it’s a scam.😵‍💫

We just need to find some who will answer “yes” and see what happens.  😳

I just now, this instant, got the identical text and also from 11112025

— not going to respond  —

instead? going to forward it to the AT&T spam and phishing reporting number 772-6 and let them deal with it!

BUT if I had been covetous of a new iPhone, I think they might’ve had me?!

@sandblaster  Seems to me to be a huge phishing attempt to catch those who have actually paid off their phones and don't know any better. AT&T, to my knowledge, never sends out text messages like this. I don't recall if there was a link or phone number in the text. I just trashed it right away.
