Don’t buy from Sam’s Clubs

Walked into a Sam’s club and sales rep asked what I paid for cell service, I said just under 200 for 4 phones. He said, what if I can get you 4 new iPhone 11 Pro’s for free and cut your bill to 160 by switching over to Att&t. I said what’s the catch, he says just port over your lines and trade in your current phones and you’ll get the new phones for free credited to your account. He said the  first two bills will be high and the third and fourth would be zero once the credits kick in. So I told him I could only switch 3 over and kept 1 line with Verizon. So we got the port pins from Verizon and switched 3 lines. I had to put over 200 bucks down at the store for the phones. He said to ship the trade ins back in the box our new phones come in with the provided label within 2 weeks. We did that, sent all 3 iPhone trades to att. First bill comes over 400 bucks, second almost 300, third still 300, no credits for porting the lines from Verizon and no trade credit. One rep said they don’t kn ow where the phones are , one said damaged, but I never received anything about the phones once they got sent off. 2 weeks after I received my new phones I get an email saying here’s your tracking label information to print to send in trades , we already sent them back with the provided labels in the new phone box like we were told. I think the trades went to the place our new phones came from, regardless att has them and they had return address’s  on them to send back if that was a problem so we can send to the right place. We called and told att about this and they said don’t worry they have the phones and would send them to the right place. Att&t Rep on the phone tells us Sam’s club reps don’t work at att and lie, there was never a promotion to switch to Att&t from Verizon and our 3 iPhones are worth 55 bucks and that there is no port credits for switching. Makes sense for me to switch from 4 lines at 198 Verizon to 3 for 288 at att and give you my perfectly working phones for nothing. Also the gift card I was supposed to get I didn’t , and the discount for my place of employment 20 percent I’m still waiting on. What a headache, never trust the people in the Sam’s clubs.

And the same guy at sams club that sold you AT&T will sell you Verizon or T-Mobile I don’t know if you noticed at the kiosk that all carriers are represented.

On August 5, 2021 my wife was shopping at Sam's Club when she was approached by an AT&T representative and was told the following:
"If you switch your numbers from T-Mobile to AT&T, we can give you a plan that will be $100.00 per month for four lines plus you can get brand new iPhone 11 phones. The phones will be free because Sam's Club is absorbing the cost of the phones for members."
My wife called me and asked me to come to the store because this fantastic deal was only available today and as the primary account holder, I needed to be there for the transaction. I arrived at the store and was told the same things by the AT&T representative. I did not question her veracity as I am standing in Sam's Club in front of a giant AT&T sign, she is wearing an AT&T polo shirt and surely everything they are telling me is legitimate. She told me that I needed to pay the tax on the phones and they would arrive at our home overnight. I paid with a credit card. When my wife commented about being a teacher, the representative said that we would get a 30% discount and our monthly bill would now be $70.00 for four lines. She looked at my wife's credentials, did something on her phone and said that we were all set. We left thinking everything was fine.
The phones arrived over the next few days, one took more than a week to arrive and each of them were activated and put into use. Several days later, I received a bill from AT&T for three of four lines in the amount of $408.94. Each line was $70.00 plus taxes, and the phones were financed for 36 months. I called AT&T customer service and was told that I could expect another bill soon, $136.24 for the fourth line that activated after the first bill was generated. I never expected or planned to pay over $500.00 on a monthly bill. When I told them that this was not what was told to us by the AT&T representative, they told me that I should talk to Sam's Club because there might be some promotion that they don't know about. I went to Sam's Club to talk to the manager who informed me that these are third party vendors and Sam's has no responsibility for them. He gave me a number for the third party (DSI Systems) company's local manager and when I called her, she informed me that I had just misunderstood the representative and if I wasn't happy, I could contact AT&T and request to return the phones.
I have spoken to AT&T customer service reps many times and no one will take responsibility for this deceptive practice. There is a presumed agency relationship between these resellers and AT&T (especially with all of the AT&T bling) and for them and their employees on this forum to keep yelling "they are not AT&T employees" is a ridiculous excuse to try to hide from the fact that they know this is and has been going on for some time.

The AT&T employee posting here as Constructive obviously has been told to defend their practices at Sam's Club. Many of his statements are not true or misleading. The last post is completely false. The AT&T rep at Sam's was at an AT&T kiosk, wearing an AT&T polo and never mentioned another carrier.

It’s 100% true they are not AT&T employees.  And when did I defend their practices? I dislike sams as much as any other in here. They lie they break the rules set forth by 3rd party agreements per AT&T Verizon etc. they will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to make a sale

@pcaterisano No, @Constructive is 100% correct. We recently had an issues at an AT&T store. The signage outside just said AT&T. The inside looked like it was all AT&T and the employees were wearing AT&T name tags/shirts. However, when I asked them, after our business was completed if they were actual employees of AT&T and they said no. They just resell AT&T services and goods. Our business was finished and we left, with some trepidation. Two weeks later we realized that they had totally screwed up our order and overcharged us. We went to an AT&T Corporate store, asked if they were in fact a Corporate Store and confirmed that they were. It took awhile in the store and included a call to the Loyalty Department but our order, and billing was corrected to what we expected it to be.

Unless you go the to AT&T website or go into an actual AT&T Corporate store, you are not dealing with AT&T. Resellers are independently owned and operated businesses who have contracted with AT&T to resell their goods and service and most will do anything to make a sale. They are also poorly trained. If the deal or promo is not listed on the AT&T website, AT&T will not honor it as it isn't their plan or promo. Authorized AT&T Resellers are kiosks, Sam's Club, Target, Best Buy, etc. Even a brick and mortar store that just has AT&T signage out front can be a reseller if you don't ask.

The "paperwork" that we received from the reseller indicated "Connect-AT&T, a reseller of AT&T services and goods", in very small print.

AT&T has no real control over what the resellers do, which imo is not right, but my guess is there are certain stipulations in the contracts between AT&T and the resellers which protects AT&T from these business tactics that some of the resellers do.

@pcaterisano

Umm, there is 4 lines for $100. And it's not 30% its 25% for your wife being a teacher. It's called AT&T's hero plan... so your numbers are fuzzy... I have a hunch you're confusing the iPhone 11 for the 12... and yes, there was a free iPhone 12 promo with qualifying trade in... (but I'll take ur word for it 😉)

Either way, everything is legitimate but it just takes 3 billing cycles for the credits to kick it. Your first month's bill is AT&T corporate pricing before Sam's  discount, full price of phones before trade in credits, prorated charges, $30 activation fee per line, and does not include teacher discount.

Sams club benefit... you get $10 off each line for 25 months... that's how you get the 4 lines for $10 with auto pay and paperless billing. You also get $120 in activation fees credited to you because you're a Sam's Club member... another benefit that your beloved corporate store will not do.

So either she told you it takes 3 billing cycles to reflect the promo and you forgot because that's more common than the cold (at least from my experience), or she didn't tell you... either way, the details are in the disclosures you signed off on and got copies of sent to your email

The Sam's Clubpromotion offered by AT&T is better than any corporate AT&T offer you can get.

Just like the dealerships where you've bought your cars your whole life, they are resellers also, not actual employees of your favorite manufacturer.

Sometimes you get a professional, knowledgeable, and trust worthy salesperson, sometimes you get a (Edited per community guidelines). In this case, it seems like the salespersons only crime was not giving you the proper expectations on when to expect the price she quoted you in the store.

But just because the dealership is a reseller doesn't  mean you stop buying cars. Just means you do the proper homework to make an educated buying decision.

If there was ever a lie to be caught, you can find the truth in the disclosures that you sign off on when you made the deal at Sams. Lazy? Don't like reading? Wanna rush the process because you rather be home then in a busy congested supermarket?... then you can only blame yourself.

I'm sorry to hear that your salesperson did not set you up with the proper expectations but you're getting everything she said you would with time. You just have to be patient my friend

@CellPhoneGuy You are so off base. I'm holding the iPhone 11 right now. Nothing was legitimate. The third bill was higher then the previous, so your math exercise is a bunch of bull. There was never a mention of auto pay, paperless, or credits. The sales person never had me sign anything, she did it all on her phone. Your idiotic comparison to car dealers is a joke. Car dealers put their name all over their building. The don't pretend to be Ford's employees and they have professional people in the business office executing the transaction. It was not a miscommunication or our not  being fully informed. We were lied to by a person in front of a giant AT&T sign, wearing an AT&T polo shirt. Your attempts to paint this as a case of us not paying attention or reading the fine print makes you sound like another AT&T employee.

@Constructive It's AT&T's practices that you are defending, They have known for years that this is happening at many resellers, but have done nothing to stop it. Aren't you embarrassed to be working for them?

@pcaterisano While I agree that AT&T should keep a tighter handle on what the resellers are doing, which makes AT&T look bad, the resellers are a privately owned/operated company so AT&T has very little say on how they perform their business practices. You can complain all you want, but ultimately you need to go back and work with the folks who sold you the goods and services in the first place and file BBB and/or FCC complaints against them.

@OttoPylot Does AT&T pay you to sit and monitor this forum? You are incredibly fast at responding to posts.
