Can my mom whose number is AT&T use my upgraded iPhone 15 Pro bought thru AT&T?

My mom also uses AT&T (different account than mine) and I want to buy an iPhone 15 Pro for her with the discounted price on my AT&T contract. She and I both are currently using unlocked iPhone 14 Pro with eSIM. Just curious if I can send the discounted new phone to her address directly. I don't want her to receive the new phone but run into any setup issues. Thank you!

No.

AT&T started enforcing its unpaid device policy in October of last year. That means that not only is the device locked to AT&T but it is restricted to the account that is paying for the phone.

@formerlyknownas  Thank you so much for your sharing! But I will pay for the device all at once instead of installment. Given that, will the new iPhone 15 Pro still be locked to my AT&T number?

Besides, when traveling abroad, is it basically unlocked? My mom has a contracted eSIM number in Australia. Can she activate Australia's carrier's number in the new iPhone from my AT&T contract? I believe it shouldn't be tying to a specific carrier when people travel abroad, should it?

Hi there, we understand your concern, and we’re here to help you.

Yes, you can upgrade the device and while trade in your old device you must enter the old device model to get a trade in credits and to activate your new device in your mom’s account, she must update IMEI in her AT&T account.

The trade in credits will still reflect in your account which take 2-3 billing cycles.

If it's paid off it can be used on another att account, and unlocked for any carrier.

However if you're looking for a discount or a deal on the phone, or have received a discount or deal on the phone, it is probably tied to your account with installments for 24 or  36 months.

Based on your reply I'm guessing that you got a discounted phone deal with a 2-year contract rather than one of the trade in installment deals.

As far as I understand it the phone will still be tied to your account for 24 months while under a two-year contract

It is not considered paid in full

@ATTHelp @formerlyknownas Thanks again! No, I'm not doing any trade-in. I'm looking for the discounted iPhone with 2-yr contract. Specifically, the discount is I can buy an iPhone Pro Max 256GB with 55% the retail price - only $648.99 (Will pay all at once, no installment, no trade-in) and I'll commit to the contract with monthly $26.5 charges to my phone bill for the following 2 years. So the question is, can my mom right now use this new phone with her AT&T or any other domestic or foreign carrier number inside the US or when she travels abroad? Thanks!

Hi there @b99741005, we understand your concern, and we’re here to help you.

To answer your question, AT&T doesn’t have any 2-year contract for devices, it has only 36 months contract. If you pay off the device in full then you use any domestic or foreign carrier number to the device which is currently in use.

@ATTHelp Thanks. In such case (36-month contract), can I just directly deliver it to my mom’s address? Does she need my help to activate that new iPhone with my AT&T number first then set up her AT&T number? Or she can just start using her new phone with her old AT&T number already? Can she use other carrier’s number? Is there such mandatory step that requires me to activate the phone with my number on the contract first before giving it to anyone else with a different number?

In another case, my company paenters with AT&T to have a special 2-year contract. In such case, presuming my company will continue paying the monthly bill charge of $26.5 for my work phone, but I buy the new iPhone (pay all the amount in full without installment with no trade-in), can my mom use the new phone with no any restrictions?

Any phone you buy from AT&T will come locked to AT&T and must meet the unlocking eligibility requirements before it can be unlocked.

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/

First, it must be fully paid off.  Second, whether you pay it off early, or buy it at full price, you have to wait 60 days before requesting an unlock.

I’m quite curious about this deal where you can get a brand new iPhone 15 pro max for 55% of the cost and only pay $26.50 on your monthly bill.  If this phone is on a business account, you probably need to talk to your company about any restrictions beyond what AT&T imposes.
