Best Way to Upgrade/Change my iPhone 5S to an Android Device

Hi there! I am less than (and almost) half way through my 2-year mobile contract. I have an iPhone 5S. I would like to switch to Android however. My wife has an iPhone 6 and she would like to keep her iPhone. We're on a family plan with AT&T.

It doesn't appear possible to change my phone online. When I try "upgrading", it won't let me list Android devices (contracted) as an upgrade option - it only allows me to purchase them outright. Is this my only option? Is it possible to switch my iPhone to an Android device and if so, what's the best way to do this? Thank you so much. 🙂

since you are still under contract, the ONLY way to change phones is to buy one outright. Yes, you can switch from an iPhone to andriod. It is probably best done in store to make sure that you have the proper data plan and the phone is properly activated.

You will have to de-register your account with apple or you may have trouble texting  people that you have iMessaged in the past.

Great, thank you for the response!

  • What does "deregistering with Apple" actually mean? For the record, I still own Apple Mac computers so I don't want to kill my main Apple account.
  • What's the reasoning behind the texting you issue you mentioned? Why would failing to "deregister" with Apple affect text messaging people on a totally new phone/platform?

Thank you again, very kind of you to help so quickly. 🙂

apple uses iMessanger which uses data and does not send thru SMS if the other person has a iphone.

here is apples site on iMessenger.
