At&T software update causes wake lock

I was messing around with my phone and touched the AT&T software update under settings.  Now my phone stays awake.  There is no update so the phone constantly checks for a new update.  Restarting helps temporarily but is there a way to stop it from checking for updates constantly?

Hi @lorij123!

Welcome to the AT&T Community Forums! Thank you for letting me know that you are having issue with your phone, I will do my best to assist.

I know that constant reminder can be annoying. There is no way to stop the device from checking for updates. Once it alerts you that you have an update, you can refuse to run it. Eventually though, the update will run on its own.

That being said, your phone is definitely not behaving in a normal manner. The phone shouldn’t continue to check for updates like that. What brand name and model phone do you have? Let me know and I will let you know what steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi @lorij123!

Thank you getting back to me! I would suggest that you first try to wipe the phone’s cache partition. Unlike a master reset, wiping the cache partition does not delete your personal data. It’s been known to work wonders when phone’s start doing quirky things.

To wipe the cache:

  1. Be sure the phone is off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Turn the phone on by pressing the Power key until the phone vibrates, then release Power.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down key.
  5. Release the Volume Down key when the black screen with red and blue lines of text appears.
  6. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until reboot to bootloader is highlighted, then select it with the Power key.
  7. The device will display a white screen with colored text.
  8. Press the Volume Down key repeatedly until BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE is highlighted, then select it with the Power key.
  9. The screen will display the white HTC screen, and then turn black. After several seconds, a picture of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation mark will appear.
  10. Hold the Power key, while pressing and releasing the Volume up key. This can be done at any time after the screen turns black. If this button combination is pressed before the image of the phone with the red triangle appears, it may take several seconds for the recovery menu to appear at the top of the screen.
  11. Press Volume Down three times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  12. Press the Power key to select wipe cache partition.
  13. Once complete, press the Power key again to select reboot system now.

If this doesn’t work, then you should just go ahead and factory reset the phone. For these steps please visit our Device Support select the make and model of your phone and click view all solutions. Once you have done this, locate the Device Topics column and select Backup and restore, then follow the steps to ensure all of your important personal data is backed up. Once that’s done, you can follow the reset steps by selecting the Troubleshooting link and clicking on Reset Device.

Hope this helps!
