ACP Wireless, how does it work
Basically I want to get my mom a new phone for Christmas. If I buy an unlocked phone, can she just transfer her sim card over? Does AT&T give sim cards for their wireless phones or would she have to go through activation of the phone? I’m confused

We are here to help you with your ACP wireless concerns, @jordydoll6.
We do understand how important it is to get your mom a new device and activate her service. To activate service with ACP (Affordable Connectivity Program), you will need to apply by going to affordableconnectivity.gov. Once you are approved, call AT&T at 866.471.0361 to enroll with your National Verifier application ID. If you are already approved for Lifeline, there is no need to re-apply for ACP.
Note: The ACP benefit will appear on the next billing cycle after the benefit is applied to the customer’s AT&T account.
If you already have current service with ACP benefits already applied to the account, no need to follow the above steps. You may upgrade her device! If you are purchasing a device elsewhere and not from AT&T's website, just make sure it is an eligible device that will work on our network. You can check out our Compatible Device List.
Once you have your new device, yes you may insert her SIM card in to the new device as long as it is the same size. If you need a new SIM, we can send you one, and you can activate the SIM online.
We hope this clears up the confusion! Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums. If you have any other questions or concerns, please reach back out as we are always here to help!
