Locally arm my home without monitoring

For personal reasons, we decided to cancel our monitoring with ATT Digital Life yesterday.  I was under the impression that my equipment would still function locally (ie. I could still set an alarm for my house & an alarm would sound locally if someone came in, just wouldn't be "Monitored"), but have found out by a supervisor named "Alex" with ATT Digital Life that it cannot.  First of all, is that true?  If so, that's POOR!  I have all this equipment that I bought with ATT to put alarms on my home that is completely useless unless I pay the monitoring fee?!

I will tell you that I've had ADT in the past and was able to use my equipment locally, even if we didn't opt for monitoring.  So, if what Alex told me is true, guess who I won't EVER use in the future for home monitoring?!!

@megnblane  Hello. The system is designed to be used with monitoring service and with the app... it does not work without the main controller being active , an account needs to be active in order for the devices to work. Most companies are this way with the devices now due to the technology. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

So, you're telling me that all this equipment at my home is USELESS unless I pay you MONTHLY! That is POOR!!!!

@megnblane  If you would like for me to look into some options that we may have to assist with the monthly monitoring , I would be happy to do so, would just need you to send me a private message with your name, account number or address and I can look into what those options would be. But that is correct, unless there is service the system does not work.

I'll tell you quite honestly that, unless you tell me that AT&T is willing to help me buy a new system that can have the ability to alarm locally only (as many systems do today & just send you a personal alert), I will not be interested. Or, willing be to refund me the $$ for the equipment that I CANNOT USE at my house. I'm really very unhappy with this situation!  [edited for privacy – please do not post personal information]

i dont understand your logic. when i signed up it was stated verbally during the ordering process, verbally upon install and in bold sentences on the agreement i signed that the system required monitoring to work. i now have ADT since i moved from an area that  digital life services and i can assure you ADT requires monitoring to work.

Perhaps ADT requires monitoring now, but they didn't always (although it's been 5 years since I worked with them). IF it was on our agreement, it was not made clear to me, as it obviously was to you. I assure you, I would not be this upset or disgruntled if it was made clear to me when I signed up for this several years ago.

It was made clear to me at time of purchase that the system needs the service to function.

Not sure how you could think otherwise. Why would ATT give you a system, without making money from the service?

Obviously, it was not made clear to us. Otherwise, I wouldn't be so frustrated. BTW, there was an initial "Service fee" to install the equipment. The equipment wasn't "Given" to us, but the $99 was waived with a 2 year agreement (pretty standard at the time). As I said before, I've had other home security systems that still functioned on site without being monitored (arm & alarm sound only at the house). Since I mainly wanted the system to protect US, not our stuff, that's always been my main desire. Pretty sad that I now have to go purchase something else (still will recoup that quickly, since I've been paying close to $50/monthly. Oh well....lesson learned!
