You don't need a 5G phone. 5G is still in its infancy and some places it doesn't work very well. There are a lot of complaints about phones with 5G that are not connecting well and the mobile data service is actually very slow. What you do need is a current phone that works on AT&T network with his voice over LTE service. Anything that AT&T sells is voice over LTE capable.
Or buy unlocked, making sure model number is correct.
