Update Galaxy Note 10 outside USA

Hi, good day. I would like to know about AT&T VPN, I have a situation and maybe you can assist me. My sister lives in USA but I live in Honduras. My sister gave me her previous mobile. It is an AT&T Galaxy Note 10+ SM-N976U. But the problem is that I am not being able to update because it states I must be inside AT&T network. So, because of this, I saw on the AT&T website something related to a USD 24/year/device plan so I can contract VPN Samsung FOTA. I would like to know if it would assist me on updating the mobile to the newest Android version since Honduras. I wrote two times already on ATT Request Info area on their website but nobody answered me… As I can see, my mobile is about 6 updates late and the third last update even upgrades the Android version to 11, so I would like to know how can I update the phone. Contracting this FOTA Samsung USD 24/year/device plan would guarantee that I would be able to update my Android version from Honduras? If correct, can someone assist me on contracting this plan as I am outside USA and the 90 days trial from their website does not allow my gmail email stating it has to be a business e-mail? I understand this issue of the ATT network and I am willing to contract this ATT VPN service as long it guarantees I will receive the official updates but can someone from ATT please point me to the right direction?!

Best regards,

Luiz (Edited to remove personal information)

@luiz8arthur

It may take a few days if you have continuous At&t connection in the USA to do all updates.

You will not get any updates outside the USA because you will not be using AT&T for service.

Prepaid does not roam in South America, Asia, Africa.  It does roam on Mexico and Canada.  But you will not get updates while roaming, because it's not connected to AT&T

This isn't a home phone issue, moving to the wireless forum.

Thanks for reaching out to us @luiz8arthur

We can provide you the answers on Firmware/Software Update Requirements!

Please know that in order to receive the firmware update on your AT&T-branded Galaxy Note 10+, the device must be active on the AT&T cellular network within the U.S.

Requesting a specific AT&T postpaid or prepaid mobile wireless plan also requires the device to be within the U.S; and is not available while residing in Honduras.

You can access the highlighted article above for more details on AT&T software updates.

We hope this information is helpful.

Good day Dwight, thank you for your answer. I am aware about it. I read so many forums about it and of course it is clear to me. What I asked is for some solution, like contracting an AT&T VPN in order to be inside AT&T network even when outside US. It makes sense to me that this would work, as I would be an AT&T client and inside AT&T network. I wrote to AT&T in many different platforms and nobody answer me related to this option. I saw Samsung FOTA services, ATT VPNs to be accessed anywhere outside US, so there must be a solution for that situation. Please assist me on those details.

Best regards,

Luiz Arthur

A VPN cannot provide you a cellular connection to AT&T which is required in order to trigger the updates. The simple answer is 'no', you cannot update the phone while outside of the United States.

Thank you lizdance40 for your answer. It is clearer to me now. Indeed, I saw many forums with the same type of answer but never clear about VPN, FOTA or anything similar… That’s why I posted here, because after so many years with so many people complaining about the same inflexibility, I thought maybe AT&T have put a solution for those who are outside US but are willing to be their client through some VPN service or any other type of solution… unfortunately, it seems there still is no alternative for those in my situation. If you or someone find out some other alternative for my problem, I appreciate a lot.

Best regards,

Last question, maybe I will go to US on the next days for a meeting, and if I buy an AT&T prepaid simcard then I would be able to upgrade once inside AT&T Network. But when I come back to Honduras with that same simcard, will I be able to keep my AT&T number and internet in roaming and update my phone? AT&T simcard in roaming let me update?

Best regards,

Luiz Arthur

Sean, my question was simple and clear. Your user is AT&T Help. If you do not want to answer me, please let someone else do, but do not kick me off into long waiting international calls that do not solve my problems nor answer my questions. That is one of the reasons of this community. To answer questions or doubts. Please someone else answer my last question. I repeat:

- maybe I will go to US on the next days for a meeting, and if I buy an AT&T prepaid simcard then I would be able to upgrade once inside AT&T Network. But when I come back to Honduras with that same simcard, will I be able to keep my AT&T number and internet in roaming and update my phone? AT&T simcard in roaming let me update?

Best regards,

Luiz Arthur

Sean, the OP cannot call, he's not a customer.
