Unlock phone

My Dad purchased a phone through AT&T. He paid the phone off and canceled the account in 2021. He has given the phone to me and a request was submitted to AT&T to unlock the phone. We are being told the unlock request is denied because its not an AT&T phone. Now what?!? I have an AT&T locked phone and no one from AT&T can fix this issue now!

If the unlocking portal says it’s not an AT&T phone, that means the IMEI is not in the unlocking database.  Could be any number of reasons for this, but the end result is that it isn’t in there, so the online unlocking portal won’t work.  You’d have to contact AT&T and try to get them to manually research the IMEI to see if it’s eligible for unlocking.  If you aren’t an AT&T customer, they may not be inclined the help you.  You can try filing a BBB or FCC complaint to get it escalated to a higher level of customer service.

Dad may need proof of purchase, and he needs to submit request, .  ATT doesn't help 3rd parties with unlocking.
