Switching from Straight Talk to AT&T

I currently have 3 phones with Straight Talk.  I have one that is unlocked that I will be switching now to AT&T.  My question is, I also have an Iphone 4 and a Samsung Galaxy S3 that I bought with Straight Talk/ as Straight Talk phones.  Can I switch these over to AT&T with problem as well?  If so, do I need to get SIM cards?

Hello Community!

This is one of our most popular threads, and has generated a lot of great questions from the community.

I wanted to take a moment and provide a bit of clarity around the concern, and give anyone with this question a clear path to resolution.

StraightTalk, TracPhone, and Net10 customers that are attempting to Port to AT&T absolutely can do so.  The process is exactly the same as with any other carrier, with one caveat.  These companies are different than major carriers like Verizon or T-Mobile in that the Port process takes longer, and can even be longer than 24 hours.  This tends to cause the confusion or appearance that it is "failing" or not working.  It is simply a longer delay to a successful port due to their system limitations.

You can also check your status and other great information for your port at our Port Support page.

If you are attempting to move from StraightTalk, TracPhone, or Net10 to AT&T and it has been over 24 hours, please contact our port support team so we can engage those companies to address the concern.

Thanks

It shouldn't be a problem at all if the phones are AT&T branded, it if the phones are unlocked. 🙂 The SIM cards will be provided to you upon opening up your account. 🙂

Welcome to the AT&T family and hope to see you around in the forums! 😄

Only one phone is AT&T branded. I do not know about the other phones; I
bought them through Straight Talk. Will they work?

The other phones were purchased through Straight Talk, not unlocked.  I have an Iphone 5 and a Samsung S3 bought with Straight Talk.  How do I get these working with AT&T?

You will have to call Straight Talk and request an unlock code for both phones. I'm not familiar with how their policies work, but be aware that they may reserve the right to deny your unlock request.

I just visited my local AT&T store with the intent of switching my iPhone 4 from Straight Talk to AT&T and the employee working there told me that he had never successfully been able to port a phone number over from Straight Talk and that I would have to get a new number. My internet research suggests that it should be possible. Can anyone advise?

Suggest you try another store, make sure it is a corporate store and not a authorized retailer

I just tried porting my StraightTalk number to AT&T today at a corporate store and it failed miserably. Since StraightTalk service (or a least my service) is provided by AT&T's network my phone number is already owned by AT&T.

I know some people have been able to do it by getting someone who knows what tricks are required, but nobody at the store in Germantown could manage it. They ended up saying the only way to get it to work would be to port to another carrier then back into AT&T. I tried calling 3 other corporate stores in the area to see if anyone else knew what to do but not a single one would answer their phone. After ringing through to each store I just got a message saying everyone was busy and dumping me back out to the menu.

In any event, porting from StraightTalk to AT&T isn't straight forward.

I did finally get this to work by visiting a different corporate store here in San Francisco. I'm not sure how the guy did it (he had never done it before), but it took him almost an hour and repeated phone calls to AT&T to achieve. I agree that it would be nice if the AT&T stores would answer their phones...it would be great to know if a store has the ability to do what you need to do before you drive out there. And thanks, Dmitriy, for your response!
