Shutoff 4G modem after multiple assurances it would not be

I have a Cradlepoint router with 4G modem that I have used over AT&T for many years at a remote rural location where the cell network is the only possible internet access. When the 3G shutdown was pending in February, the device was listed as compatible after the shutdown on their network. I called twice and both times was assured it would continue to work. It did continue to work normally all though March and April until last night at 10pm. In the last few weeks, I received a text and letter from AT&T that the line with the device would be cancelled on May 3. On both occasions I called and after they spoke with their tech support I was assured that it would not be cancelled and would continue to function after May 3, yet it has now been cancelled. I spent more than 3 hrs on the phone this morning with 6 different people at AT&T and got conflicting stories and continually transferred with no resolution and was then placed on hold for an hour until I had to give up.. The location is over 1000 miles away from me so is not easy for me to go deal with and the internet connection provides security monitoring and device control when I am not there. I could have done something about this when I was there in March had they not assured me that my device was compatible and would not be shutdown. Yet with nearly no notice, they no longer seem to think it is compatible (as recently last Friday I was told it was fine and would not be shutdown.)

Worse, when I look up their current compatibility list there are no similar devices listed at all! They are all battery powered mobile hotspots with no Ethernet ports (which I require for several non-wireless devices). I do not know what to do at this point and am extremely unhappy that I was given false information for months on end and now fixing the problem within AT&T is starting to seem impossible.

Is your device a 3G device? If Yes. Since we shut down the 3G network, there won't be data or voice service for devices that don’t have at least have 4G capabilities.

 

This means that while some device features might still work, you won’t be able to access our network unless you upgrade to a newer device. 

If you have a Prepaid or Post paid account with AT&T. Please ensure you are checking your specific model number to see if it matches:

  • Will my AT&T phone work after the 3G sunset? - Be sure to check the specific model number
  • Wondering if your unlocked non-AT&T devices will work with AT&T?-Be sure to check the specific model number
  • How do I prepare if my phone isn’t supported? Shop our current deals to upgrade your device to a phone that is compatible with our network. 
  • Curious about your current phones capabilities? Review your device, some require software updates to enable HD voice, Wi-Fi Calling, Video Call, Advanced Messaging or 5G
  • Does this affect PREPAID? Talk and data services will only work for AT&T PREPAID wireless phones and devices that support at least 4G LTE and HD Voice.
