Prepaid phone on post paid account

Why is the prepaid phone still locked since we pay full price to buy the phone?? That's like being held hostage. Verizon doesn't keep phones purchased outright locked, why does att??

As a Verizon customer, yes Verizon does lock phones for a minimum of 60 days. Also phones that are purchased for Verizon prepaid are locked to Verizon prepaid and do not work on Verizon postpaid until they have met the conditions for unlocking on the prepaid side.

Phones sold buy prepaid services are discounted below the regular retail price which is why they can be locked.  ( even back when Verizon was not permitted to walk phones, they were permitted to lock prepaid phones for up to 12 months)

Anyhow, AT&T prepaid phones are sold at least $100 under their retail cost and are therefore required to have AT&T prepaid service for six months of paid consecutive months in order to be eligible for unlocking. Service on postpaid does not count towards a prepaid 6 months of required paid service.
