phone number unknown

I got a new prepaid AT&T wireless phone. It shows the IMEI and the Serial number in the settings, but shows the phone number is unknown. How do I find out what my number is? I cannot make calls from the phone, and when I call customer service, they ask for my ten digit phone number.

Hello @rheadrp.

You’ll have to activate your phone to get a phone number assigned. There are three options to activate.

To activate online, go to https://soc.att.com/2KjBXYU.

By using your new phone:

  1. Insert your AT&T PREPAID SIM card into the phone.
  2. Insert the battery, and charge your phone.
  3. Once charged, turn your phone on.
  4. Select a rate plan (Activation code) from the “SIM Card quick start guide for phones”.
  5. From the home screen of the device, enter the Activation Code and ZIP code where you will use your service most, then press the Call icon.
  6. You'll receive a text message with your new phone number and instructions to power off your phone for 10 minutes to complete activation.
  7. After 10 minutes, you're ready to power on the phone and add money to your account.

To activate over the phone, call us at 877.426.0525 for automated instructions. You will need to know your SIM card & IMEI number for activation. Note: Activation will take around 10 minutes to complete. Your IMEI can be found on your phone by tapping Menu > Settings > Phone information.  The SIM card number is printed on the SIM card.

This response does not help the AT&T client whose phone is ALREADY activated, yet the settings still display 'Unknown Number'... no problem making a call or texts and my number is made known to the numbers dialed, so why can't my phone see it for itself?? Weird. I've powered on and off numerous times.

What else can I do? Please respond asap. I have no access to set up voicemail and that has cost me call backs on jobs and inability for my Google Voice incalling to route to this number for some reason so upsetting clients. Help!

Okay well, I was able to set up voicemail by going to my phone utility, clicking the three dots on the right of the search bar, prompting a dragdown menu.. clicking Call Settings, I was taken to another list and clicked Voicemail.. taken to another list and clicked Setup and manually entered my phone's number there. Upon doing so, when I went back to the phone utility and pressed 1, I was able to set up my Voicemail. Woohoo!!

However... in my About Phone settings, it still says Phone number unknown, and I will need to resolve this ASAP in order to forward my Google Voice calls to this phone's number.. can anyone at AT&T help me?

Hello Forum, I also have a new service where my phone does not know it's own phone number. I received a startup packet from AT&T (auto pay) with simm and literature including my new phone number. I installed the simm in an unlocked Galaxy J3 Orbit (previously Tracfone). I am able to use wireless to browse the internet and tether my laptop to the internet but I have no phone service in or out. It hangs up as soon as the number is dialed. I removed, cleaned and re-installed the simm a couple of times with numerous full shutdowns and still no phone. I also seem to be getting someone elses text message sporadically. Any ideas? Thanks, Kerry

I have the same issue on the new MIcrosoft Surface DUO.  I tried chatting with different ATT reps and it includes 2 supervisors.  One of them suggested I file a warranty claim? and the other one said, just return it?  I was like [EDITED]1500 phone and it doesn't register the number?

I took my phone to the AT&T store in Pittsfield where after an hour and a half, with the help of a tech, and the help of a few other techs, and a call to tech service were all unable to get to the bottom of it. I purchased a new phone to put everyone out of their misery which, of course, fixed it. Kerry
