The iPhone 3G was introduced around 2008. Being as it is a 3G phone, it is not longer supported on AT&T's network, and probably other networks as well, since 3G was shutdown well over a year ago. Get your money back.

Those phones are no longer supported by Apple either. Even if you could get ATT to approve the unlock, it is unlikely you can complete the unlock using iTunes.

The oldest iPhone supported by any us carrier right now is the iPhone 6. And there's a few mvnos that don't even support that. Apple no longer supports the iPhone 4S and older. Those are all 3G phones and there is no longer 3G service in the United States. Other countries are also shutting off their 3G service, Canada for example is in the same process. While those phones are nice for novelty, they aren't nice for function they can't even be unlocked anymore.
