Does this work for the windows version of the M8? I don't have the android one.

Should this gesture not function on the Windows version of the HTC One M8, I’d recommend installing the Play To app which allows you to stream your content to DLNA devices connected to the same WiFi network! The Play To app is available on the Windows Store - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/play-to/8257b398-f4bf-4483-97c7-6fd6a1e60bbf

Play To is only available for Nokia devices. It's what I used before upgrading to the M8
