HTC One M8, 5.0.2 GPS turns itself on.

My phone's GPS turns itself on anytime I make a call, recieve a call, send a text, wake it from a long sleep, or change cell signals. This constantly wakes my phone and drains my battery. I have put the phone into safe mode and it still happens. I have location off, location history off, and maps disabled. It still happens. I wiped the cache after the OTA to 5.0.2 and through frustration did a factory reset. My GPS turns itself on! I have every ATT app disabled and it still turns itself on. Since I can't S-OFF my phone to Properly Root and lock the virus known as "IQ Agent Service" that is causing the problems, how can I fix my phone? This problem was in 4.4.4 and now with the new update to 5.0.2, AT&T has still included the "IQ Agent Service" bug and it is even more troublesome now. How can I fix this problem. I have scoured the entire internet over the last few nights for problably 10-15 hours and this is a known problem in the community and the only solution seams to be to install a custom ROM. How can I correct this problem? Should I just switch to T-Mobile or Verizon?

I can't understand how they can get away with this, they are using our phones to collect data for them, we should be getting paid for this. I don't want to switch to Tmoble so I'm waiting for my contract to expire and will take all my 5 lines elsewhere.

I would call them, but I hear that's useless.

AT&T pushes updates, they don't program all the software.
Have you contacted AT&T at all for repair under warranty?

Nothing is broken with the hardware, it is a software issue. My warranty is with AT&T, not HTC. The problem is AT&T's Software. I shouldn't have to install my own software to correct an AT&T issue. If I brick the phone trying to fix their problem, then I am out a phone that I am still paying on. So, my options are sue AT&T and break my contract, risk breaking my phone to install my own software, or deal with a phone that might not have a charge when I need it to. Before the update I was getting 2-3 days on a charge. I guess I'll take T-Mobile up on their offer and move all 4 lines I have from AT&T. Thank You for the Solution. 😉

See the bolded text.  Your warranty is with HTC.  ATT will replace the phone for you but they send the old one back to HTC.  The only phones they dont do this for is apple since apple is so tight on control.

And if you were getting 2-3 days out of a charge on an m8 you must not even use your phone.  the phone would only get me a day with 3 to 3.5 hours of screen on time.

I've definitely noticed this pesky little booger popping up on occasion too. It REALLY bugs me that this agent iq thing is still an issue. Thankfully, my battery has been doing great though. Funny thing is, whenever I stop the agent iq in my app manager, the navigation acts funny, plus the phone starts freezing for a few seconds. Since it hasn't caused an issue with my battery or performance up to now, I'm thinking I'm just gonna leave it be unless the gps starts running a lot or I start experiencing other issues.

I bought a warranty through AT&T. I break my phones often. I will not pay HTC $300 to fix my phones when I break them. When I call HTC they tell me the issue is with AT&T's Added software. AT&T will send me another phone no questions asked. This will not solve the issue, nor would HTC sending me a AT&T branded phone fix the problem. I will never buy another Carrier branded phone again. Unlocked from now on out 😉

No, I don't use my phone for work or games. I deleted my FB and don't play on social sites. So the battery does last a long time. I also have all sync off and all backgrounds are Black. I know how to make a battery last a long time. GPS turning on by itself everytime I wake my phone and even when I dont, every hour throughout the day when I have location and location history off is a nuisance. I even put the GPS widget on my homescreen and when I unlock it it turns green. It doesn't stay on, but it does it everytime.

AT&T no longer denies warranty service due to software mods.  If you look at their warranty terms, you will see that they changed in the last year or so (not sure exactly when it changed).  Only physical damage or water damage voids the warranty.  I've seen many (maybe dozens) of reports of folks who successfully returned bootloader unlocked/rooted phones to AT&T for warranty service (to have unrelated hardware defects addressed).  Trying to get warranty service direct through HTC is another story; but as pointed out, its AT&T that handles the warranty service of HTC phones (as long as you purchased from AT&T).

Sure, you shouldn't have to mod your phone to get it to work correctly.  But I resigned myself to this conclusion years ago:  you are better off modding AT&T phones to get it to work correctly, and doing what you want with it.

How can I get S-OFF through AT&T to remove this bug?

You don't need s-off.  You need to unlock the bootloader and root, which is completely different.

If you want s-off anyway, just Google "Sunshine s-off".

FYI, this is an added android process at the request of AT&&T.  It is the carrier IQ agent and it randomly turns on the GPS to "report" in to AT&T.

HTC has told me on several occasions that this is AT&T software and is added at the request of the carrier.  Not all carriers are including this in their releases.  Supposedly it is to track the quality of the service and signal coverage.

Unfortunately the GPS turns itself on and is the cause of the battery not lasting as long as it should.  This did not appear on my M8 until the 4.4.4 OS was released.  Now with 5.0, it is still there.

You can argue with AT&T all you want but they simply don't care about it or their customers.

I did it last night. I'm going to invoice AT&T for the $25.
