generic failure and phone number unknown

Hi I bought my dad the Cingular Flex flip phone and it won't allow calls to be made or received. When I went to settings it says the number is unknown. So I thought maybe they didn't activate it right and it said the phone is activated and should work. I don't know what to do this is the second time I buy this phone for my dad. The first one was not scanned even though it's an online order. Please help me I'm losing my patience with this flip phone. I've never had such an issue before especially with a flip phone.

Thanks for checking to make sure the device is activated, this brings us one step closer to figuring out the root cause of things. Here are few suggestions we'd like you try: 

  • Check the SIM card. - You may have to take it out and put it back in if the phone displays Insert SIM or Emergency Call Only.
  • Confirm you have a signal. - Use our Coverage Map to check the service in your area.
  • Reset the network settings. - This will help sync the device to the best tower.

You can also use our Device Support tool. It has the ability to run a real-time diagnostics on the device. Simply scroll to 'Fix My Wireless' and sign in to begin.

 

Once the phone is connected to the network, you should be able to call a friend or yourself from your father's phone, and the number will appear on the Caller ID.
