Femtocell (small cell) and GPS

I'm planning to get a femtocell (small cell) for my home. Some web pages says these devices have a GPS receiver. I'm planning to install the femtocell in my basement. No chance it will ever get a GPS signal.

Will the femtocell work OK without receiving a GPS signal?

Thanks.

Hi there @steve16!

I hope that device works well! We are only really able to give advice in relation to our own Microcell.

When it comes to that, you do need a GPS lock on activation for it to work properly. Some people have it work without a GPS signal afterwards, but there is a periodic check for GPS that can usually take it offline if it is out of GPS range (say within a basement).

I hope that is useful, take care!

FWIW I use an older DPH-151 Microcell at a vacation condo we rent over the winter months. I purchased a external GPS antenna similar to one of these in order for the Microcell to lock on to the GPS signal...

Thanks Fiona and Ace. I'm looking at the AT&T Microcell currently sold in the AT&T cell stores. It would seem that I would have to put it in a window and run an ethernet cable on the floor between it and the wifi router. Not sure if I'm willing to put up with that clutter.

Is there a way to wirelessly link it to my wifi router?

Hello @steve16,

It’s great to hear that you may be interested in the MicroCell!

The MicroCell does require a clear view of the sky from a window in order to acquire and maintain a GPS lock.

A connection via an Ethernet cable to your router or modem is also required. The Internet connection must be hardwired in to ensure that the MicroCell is always running efficiently.

I do hope this helps out in making your decision about the MicroCell and have a great day.
