I figured it out myself.  I had the wrong email app.  went to the play store searched "email" and went down the long list.  there is a purple envelope mail symbol -email app for android, Craigpark limited- initially it didn't send email, the same problem I had going in.  I left it installed to go to an appointment and when I came out I saw that my test email to myself had come through.  so far so good since then.

I am sorry you are having trouble with your email server settings. I see you may have already resolved this issue in which case do you still need assistance? Here is a list of att server settings. Please let me know if you still need assistance.
