Will towers with just 3G disappear?

I frequently drive a 50 mile stretch of a rural/mountainous highway in western Oregon where my iPhone shows a "3G" signal, ranging between 1 and 4 bars. I assume that means my phone is connecting to a tower or towers that only have 3G radios on them. Does that mean once AT&T completely disables 3G, I won't have any signal there? Or will they replace the 3G with 4G/LTE or 5G radios?

They should be replacing those 3G radios with 4G or 5G. No guarantees you won’t just have no signal but in most cases you shouldn’t have no signal.

@Constructive -- do you mean they will remove those tower(s) so I won't have any signal there at all?

@sandblaster -- I hope what you are saying is right! Otherwise AT&T offers no advantage to me, and I'll switch to Verizon....

They won’t be removing any towers. In most cases, the towers are not even owned by ATT. They either replace the 3G radios or remove them but the towers remain.

Thank you for reaching out to us @fac91745.

The 3G Sunset is part of a larger plan to improve the network and continue to invest in 4G and 5G coverage. We are continually accessing network demand to determine where to place new towers; additionally, many existing towers are already compatible with both 3G and 4G.

We hope this clarifies your concern but please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

@ATTHelp -- your response doesn't really answer my question. If a current tower only does 3G, is it possible that it'll go away when "3G Sunset" is completed, resulting in no coverage for that area?

No they would repurpose that tower for 5g and or 4g but I’ve never seen a 3g only tower personally
