Will Northeast MI ever receive 3G?

I've heard talk about how ATT is "working on their network coverage" and plans to provide 3G service in Northeast MI "in the coming months".  Well, now that another 2 year contract has expired, I'm seriously wondering if I would be better off jumping to Verizon.  The EDGE data network up here if virtually useless.  5 full bars, yet extremely poor data transfer.

Can anyone provide an HONEST answer as to when this coverage is planned to be upgraded???  Verizon has had 3G for quite a long while up here...

I'm not sure but I suspect no.  There could be a danger of electrocution and lightning strikes not to mention slippery surfaces.

Of course the weekend they work on the tower its been raining everyday. I wonder if they are going to wait till the rain passes then continue working or move on to a different tower?

Looks like something may be happening. Im getting no data at all on my phone. Just a cell signal. So hopefully that means they are working on it.

Weird now my phone is displaying "GPRS" instead of E.

Post Edited.

That means you are on the basic network. I would guess it will be a few weeks before they turn up "4G" or both 4G and LTE after they get the panels up. Like a few sites that I know of that are still E, I suspect backhaul is part of the reason which has delayed them from upgrading that site sooner, not to mention the guy wire issues.. AT&T hasn't invested in their circuits like they should have and the current transfer lines(T-1's) are insufficient to support highspeed data.

I suspect they will upgrade that site before the end of this month so hang in there, as it will happen. AT&T won't have the overall fastest network by any means, but when they get their sites upgraded it should be a great network.

Don't look for VoLTE anytime soon:) Lol

Oh ok. That's weird they would shut down edge. Does it usually take them awhile to activate the 4G after they get the panels up?

Probably a couple of weeks.....maybe a bit sooner. Hopefully they will get the tower near Arnold fired up soon as well:)

My friend just sent me a text update about the Lathrop tower. He said "In about a month my source said maybe 4G. The panels are up but cable hasn't been run to it yet."

Yeh I would say at this point that AT&T is not really the culprit here but rather sub-standard tower crews. The reason why I say this, there is a tower downstate by me that had a crew working on it this past week. In 3 days, the techs replaced a total of 9 panels(3 per sector) on Verizon's rack that is shared with AT&T. All panels were installed, including coax and radio equipment, and was up and running.

The first pic was taken earlier this summer and if you look on the top rack (Verizon) you can see 4 panels per sector: 2 "Shark Fin" panels, 1 LTE panel, and 1 Air 21 AWS panel.

The second pic, you can see the existing AWS panel, 2 new flat panels( for voice and possibly VoLTE I assume), and 1 new LTE panel with an RRU.

The bottom rack is AT&T. When they replaced their panels last year, they were there and gone within a few days. Again, my guess is the slow progress up in the U.P. is due more to the tower crews and not AT&T.

They must have removed the Osprey nest that was up as well:/

My friend sent me another text saying, the reason for the crappy service was a radio trasmitter or something was burned out. The 4G panels are up just need to be connected.

and there arent any Verizon towers around here so they all use AT&T. whatever that means. lol

Is there anything I should ask my friend to ask his source?

Not off hand.

The radios are installed on the tower so it is very possible. Is your phone still saying GPRS by chance?

My last comment was to question why it is taking them so long to get that site upgraded. 2 to 3 days all equipment should be installed and the site should be ready to fire up. Weather permitting of course.

My neighbor owns a lot of land and he was wondering how you go about getting a hold of AT&T to see if they would build a see tower on it?

EDIT: I was in Arnold yesterday and the tower is still not turned on. Here is the info about the tower I found online, http://www.antennasearch.com/sitestart.asp?sourcepagename=antennachecktowerreview&getpagename=pgtowerdetail_fcc&cmdrequest=getpage&ipos=1®istration_number=1289029

I really don't know who your neighbor could contact at AT&T regarding a new site. From what I heard, they have put new site builds on hold in northern Michigan at least until late next year. The only upgrade I have seen up here this fall is the site in Rose City. AT&T has finally converted it over to fiber Ethernet.

That site in Arnold is definitely an AT&T site. On the door leading into the shelter, or the panel at the base, you should see an Orange and White plaque that says property of AT&T. Here is some info on that site from the American Tower site locator:
