No service in an area with AT&T service on their map

I have a Nokia Lumina 520 and have wonderful service where I live however, when I travel over the hill to visit friends I loose service.  This area, on the AT&T coverage map, looks exactly the same as the map coverage at home. So, is there something I need to do to access service over the hill?

It isn't unusual to find regular dead spots within coverage area. Many are mapped by third parties.

Google "at&t dead spots map". Or "cellular dead spots."
You should find local maps marked with known dead spots by different carriers.

In addition to this, coverage in any area not only depends on distance from a cell tower, it also depends on the phone. Some phones have better transmit/receive antenna's than others so even though you get no coverage in a certain area on your Lumina, it is possible that a different phone would still get a signal.

Thank you for your response.  I realize there are dead spots everywhere however my concern is not a spot, it is a 35 mile area with absolutly no service, no bars, nothing even indicating service at all. I drive right in front of a few cell towers, and nothing. Mind you, that I am referring to the AT&T coverage map from the AT&T web page. It does indicate a 3G handset is needed and I would think my phone is 3G capable. So, is it the phone or is it the service? Is there a difference between having a contract vs. a "pay as you go" or "Go phone" even though the coverage area for both types of service indicate coverage for the area in question, or could this be a misrepresentation of coverage by AT&T?

Hi @bentonbound

I’m sorry to hear you’re experience service issues in particular areas. If you could please send me a private message with the following information, I can look into coverage in the area and find why you’ve been experiencing a lack of service.

  • Cell and/or account number
  • Full address of affected location
  • Signal strength in area
  • Device Make/Model

Whilst it’s true there will be areas with dead zones, I’d like to make sure we do everything we can to try to provide the best service possible!

Thanks!
