I Went To Central Amerinca - My Experience with AT&T International Day Pass

I went on vacation and used AT&T as my "travel buddy"

I recently went to Nicaragua to visit a friend. It was an amazing trip! I met new people, learned to surf, enjoyed a lot of the local food, rode a horse for the first time, went to the top of an active volcano, and was able to share my adventures with family back home while on the go with AT&T's International Day Pass.

Before my trip, I signed into my account via the myAT&T app and toggled Day Pass to on. Now, if you are wondering if turning it on charges you, it does not until you use data, make a call, or send a text. To do this, perform the following:

On the app, scroll down until you see Manage Plan & Add Ons > Explore available add-ons > Select Travel Outside the U.S > Activate Day Pass

Of course, I had to let everyone back home know I landed safely and shared pictures of my adventures. Once I sent my first text, AT&T International Day Pass was activated.

Troubleshooting

While I was there, I was able to call and text, but there was an issue with data – it was not working. I met another person from the States who had a competitor's service. They had no issue, with the exception of their data allotment (they ran out of data). I thought, "How is my data not working and theirs is?" It was a bit embarrassing.

The Fix

While on the hour-long ferry to a volcanic island (pic above), I decided to troubleshoot. My first thought: reset the network. As I was snooping around the settings, I tapped on the mobile networks menu and that's where I found the culprit. International Data Roaming was turned off. I toggled it to on, and boom, I was able to use apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and so on.

While my fix was simple, turning on international data, you may need to try the following:

  • Restart your device
  • Make sure Airplane Mode is off. Yes, we forget to turn it off when getting off the plane
  • Reset the mobile network - you will lose custom settings like Wi-Fi Passwords
  • Check out our international data plan troubleshooting page
