Cell Phone coverage in the Bahamas

I am planning a cruise to the Bahamas in the fall and I have a couple questions.......

1) While on the ship (in the ocean), do we need to turn our phones onto airplane mode or turn off data roaming...or both...or neither?

2) When we are at port in the Bahamas, we plan to have our phones on airplane mode. Do we also need to turn off data roaming?

3) Do we need to turn on WiFi calling while still stateside, or can this be done once we leave?

4) Are there any other steps we need to take to avoid roaming charges? We do not wish to purchase an international plan.

Airplane mode on prevents roaming on any carrier, so yes, leave airplane mode on in the Bahamas and on the cruise ship. No other settings matter as long as airplane mode is on. With airplane mode on you won’t roam and won’t get any roaming charges. If you wish to use WiFi calling, yes, it needs to activated before you travel.
