Can't Connect to the Internet When Away From Home Network

How do I connect to the AT&T 5G network when I'm away from home so I can connect to the internet? My plan hasn't changed since 2019, so it's not likely my plan, and I've had my iPhone 11 for 2 years, so I'm assuming it's something new (could be an issue with a new IOS update for example?).

I only recently had an issue, so something is different with my settings. So I'm basically asking for tips on how to reach the AT&T network when away from home.

I tried to go into Settings, Cellular Data Options, but don't see any way to have the AT&T network connect to my phone.

Thank you!

I Googled the heck out of this, and read that I need to make sure Safari is switched to "ON" under "Cellular Data" under my Settings, Cellular settings. That fixed my issue. Thank you to everyone who responded.

Wi-Fi is a function of home internet service, or a dedicated hotspot device. Why would your phone not show it's away from Wi-Fi and not show a Wi-Fi signal when you are away from home?

Why would your phone not correctly show LTE instead of Wi-Fi when you are away from home?

I believe the problem you were trying to describe is a lack of sufficient mobile data. Even when you have three or four bars which would indicate good signal strength, you have the ability to talk and text, but you do not have priority enough to be able to access mobile data.

Mobile data would allow you to do things like check your social media, and access your home security while you are away from home.

Pretty good plan since you have three or four bars, that does indicate good signal strength. So the next thing to check is do you have a plan that allows you priority data sufficient to get you through a typical month?

Some plans are very high priority like the unlimited extra and premium plan. Medium priority plans like the unlimited extra plan allow you 50 gigabytes of priority data but you are not prioritized as high as the premium plan, FirstNet, and business plans.

If you are on the starter plan, or the unlimited value plus plan, both of those are deprioritized. That means everyone else has data access before you do.

Thank you for your advice, but perhaps my question wasn't clear -- how do I connect to the AT&T 5G network when I'm away from home so I can connect to the internet? My plan hasn't changed since 2019, so it's not likely my plan, and I've had my iPhone 11 for 2 years, so I'm assuming it's something new (could be an issue with a new IOS update for example?).

Hi @dusabpeg! Let's point you to the right direction!

Please be informed that iPhone 11 is not compatible with 5G network, Apple has introduced the 5G network only from iPhone 12 series.

You can change cellular network settings please follow the steps,

1. From the home screen, select the Settings app.

2. Select Cellular. To turn cellular data on or off, select the Cellular Data switch.

Note: To turn LTE data on or off select Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > desired option. Learn more about Apple iPhone 11 - Signal & Cellular Data - AT&T (att.com).

Please reach out to us if you have any questions!

@dusabpeg

IPhone 11 doesn’t support 5G, so you’re not going to get 5G no matter what.  Are you saying that you phone won’t connect to cell data at all?  Do you have voice (phone works as a phone) and SMS/MMS text (not iMessage) when you’re not connected to WiFi?  When you’re not connected to WiFi, what does it show AT&T in the upper corner?

Thank for making corrections and clarifications in your second post. However, Editing your first post makes The replies to that first post look rather odd.

Thank you for your advice, but perhaps my question wasn't clear -- how do I connect to the AT&T 5G network when I'm away from home so I can connect to the internet?

You would not connect to 5G you would connect to a 4G/ LTE or LTE Network.   iPhone 11 is not a 5G device even in a 5G location with a 5G plan. You might see 5Ge, but that is just advanced LTE.

My plan hasn't changed since 2019, so it's not likely my plan, and I've had my iPhone 11 for 2 years, so I'm assuming it's something new (could be an issue with a new IOS update for example?).

Very possible.

I only recently had an issue, so something is different with my settings. So I'm basically asking for tips on how to reach the AT&T network when away from home.

Power cycling your device off and then back on again may help you reconnect with the network. If it doesn't, your iPhone 11 could certainly not be under any financial obligation anymore and you should probably consider testing the other two available networks. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have options for a free test drive with the ESIM on your iPhone

You might want to check some of the common things that cause data to not connect. The easiest one is to make sure the data is turned on both on the phone itself, and in your online account.

If you have a data plan where data is significantly deprioritized, the problem may simply be too much congestion because too many other people are using the same network and your plan does not allow priority.  You did not indicate what plan you are on?
