*69 Calls

Hello, I am a 911 emergency dispatcher in a small town in Indiana. We dispatch police, fire, and EMS. We are the 69th district in the state of Indiana. When you call *69 from a wireless phone, it sends you to our dispatch center. Today alone, we have received over 300 calls from cell phones on the AT&T network from all across the county due to people dialing *69. A TikTok/Facebook Reel went viral telling people that have AT&T that if they dial *69, they will increase their coverage area. This is obviously not true and never was. This extreme call volume is taking away from actual emergencies. We have tried to contact AT&T before to have them change this, however they have never given any sort of effort into fixing this. This is taking away from actual real life emergencies. If any AT&T employee views this, please send me a message. We need to fix this. It is quite literally imperative this get fixed.

*69 on all carriers works the same way...it dials the last incoming number (as long as it's within 30 minutes).

I've never heard of this supposed trick.  Did a search and see nothing.

Good luck figuring it out

It might be better to engage the FCC on this one. https://www.fcc.gov/general/public-safety-support-center

This is similar to a 911 outage so the FCC should be able to get accelerated support.

They have an emergency center at 202-418-1122 which may be able to advise.
