Unbundled ATT Phone

I want to go with prepaid, phone is att and paid for. Do I need to port my own number over to prepaid? And do I need to get a new SIM card

If you are currently ATT Postpaid it is probably just easiest to go into an ATT corporate store and have them move your account over.  That is what I did.

You don’t port your number, someone has to move your number from postpaid to prepaid. As noted above, best to go to an ATT corporate store.

In theory you can do it on the phone.  But a couple years ago I tried to help someone move that way, and we were told to go to a store.

@kevink  I was going to mention that but from what I understand, moving postpaid to prepaid requires someone who really knows what they are doing and the probability of getting that person on the phone is not high.

In her case, she had some old plan on a line dating from 1999.  The steps involved the employee changing the plan to something more current on ATT Postpaid before it could move to prepaid.

Some of these systems make you think it would have just been easier to port to a different carrier for a short period then come back in as a "new" customer.
