SIM already activated?

I just bought a prepaid mobile hotspot.  While trying to activate it online I got stuck in the screen to make a payment - it kept saying something was wrong with my card.  I called customer service and they told me that my SIM is activated but with a different zip code.  There is literally no other zip code that it would be except my home one, which I used.  They are saying they can't do anything and I have to go to a store.  I am returning it instead.  How does this happen?

If you purchase an AT&T hotspot, it should have been done at an AT&T store and they should have helped you set up your account so that all two-step verification processes and information would go to your email, not via text message which is the default. 

At that time you should have been set up with a password and a PIN code as well. 

Did that happen? 

Just a warning AT&T will refund devices, less a restock fee as long as all packaging material is included. Not so much service. Prepaid Service is not refundable
