“Set up cellular data” menu missing?

The “set up cellular data” menu option (under settings, cellular data) has disappeared from my iPad. I have purchased prepaid airtime plans before with no issues. There is a menu option in the at&t section that says “set up FaceTime over cellular,” but there is no option to purchase a data plan. Running iOS 12.0.1 (the update that was just released). It has been a few months since I needed wireless data, so I don’t know when it disappeared. Suggestions?

Hi, @PAuser,

With the add cellular data option missing since the update, let's find another way to add data. Can you access your myAT&T account on the iPad and add data in it? Please let us know.

It appears that I can't add prepaid airtime via the myAT&T app. The app won't accept my login info, if I try "forgot password" says it doesn't recognize my user ID, and it won't let me create a new ID by entering the device phone number and billing zip code - "Sorry we could not validate your information."

To make sure I'm being clear: I have never used the myAT&T app before. I am trying to add prepaid airtime to an iPad. It looks like the myAT&T app is for postpaid subscribers who have a postpaid account.

This is what I want to purchase, and all of the online documentation says to purchase the plan by going to Settings, then Cellular Data, and then Set Up Cellular Data on the iPad, which is what I have done in the past. The Set Up Cellular Data option is no longer showing on my iPad.

Still no success with this. I have tried a full erase and factory reset on the iPad (did it 3 times). I have also removed and reinserted my SIM card several times.

I went to my local AT&T store today and the associate tried several things online - I don't know what she did - but couldn't make anything happen. I also tried purchasing a prepaid plan via the AT&T kiosk at the store. It accepted my device phone number and identified me by name, but gave a message that the system was having trouble and I should try again later.

I have also tried today to purchase a plan at the AT&T prepaid number, 800-901-9878. It doesn't recognize my device phone number, and says I may need to go to the AT&T store to get a new SIM card. I had asked at the store if I might need a new SIM card, and they said that wasn't the problem. Maybe I need to insist they give me a new SIM?

I'm having a hard time believing I'm the only one with this issue. If you are reading this and have the same problem, please leave a reply.

I found a solution to this problem.

Prepaid cellular airtime for an iPad can be purchased from a browser by going to att.com/ipadlanding. I was able to purchase the prepaid plan I wanted and add airtime to my iPad.

I discovered the information in an article on the prepaidphonenews website.

This is a very simple answer to the question of how to purchase a prepaid plan if it can't be done from the ipad under "Settings, Cellular data."

It is totally beyond me why AT&T phone, online, and store support staff are unaware of this method, especially when I am trying to give AT&T money. Maybe the iPad is an obscure, little-used product?Smiley Frustrated Some suggested trying att.com/buyasession, which may work for other tablets but doesn't work for iPads.

All in all, this was a frustrating experience that cost me way too much time, and I got no useful guidance from the people who should know the answer. The correct approach with this issue, as with most technical problems, was "Go figure it out yourself." Anyway, I hope this post will help somebody else resolve this problem on their iPad.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you PAuser!!!  After spending two hours in the ATT store, and on the phone to 5 different people at “customer service” with no explanation as to why I couldn’t pay for minutes the usual way - I finally happened upon this forum and comment. I followed your directions and it worked!
  • My question to ATT is WHY did they feel as though they needed to hide it...could it be that they are trying to force us to sign up for a monthly service plan????
  • Also, if they were planning to change the way in which customers were to pay then they should have at least notified us!....very poor customer service and support!!!

I really appreciate your work on this. I had the exact same issue and it was infuriating. I use iPad cellular data when I travel and a couple of months ago I could no longer add data. I called Apple and after an hour of trying things they told me they didn’t know and to call at&t.

So so I added the data via the website (which had a history of my purchases so it is my account all right) but it won’t seem to kick in on my iPad. Did it take some time to activate?

Sorry to hear you are struggling with this, too.

Cellular data worked for me immediately (within a few minutes) after I purchased the plan via the att.com/ipadlanding website.

I don't have any indication on my iPad under "Settings, Cellular data" that cellular data has been purchased, but cellular data is working. I do see updates under cellular data usage showing how much data each application has used.

After purchasing the data plan, I received an email from AT&T saying (in part): "You have purchased the xxxxx rate plan, and your account login is xxxxx@zzz.com. Please keep this information. You'll need it to access your account later through Settings on your iPad."

Contrary to the AT&T email, I still can't "access my account through Settings on my iPad."

If you figure out anything, please post what you learn. It appears that we're not getting any help from Apple or AT&T on this.

Good luck!
