iPhone 13 Call Failed

I've been getting 'Call Failed' whenever I try to call someone. I think it started about a week and a half ago. I've been using AT&T for the past couple years and I got the iPhone 13 last year. Everything was working fine until a week and a half ago.

I contacted Apple and they ran a diagnosis on my phone and did not find any errors on the device, so they recommended to contact the carrier.

The weird thing is, everything else works (messages, internet, etc) except for calls. I don't think I've changed anything recently. Please help

Hello @zson0123, we understand your frustrations with not being able to make calls on your iPhone 13 device and we want to help.

We first want you to review our forums article titled "Dropped Calls & Low Signals" for further direction and help on what to do when your device is experiencing poor service.

Also please be advised, during peak times, AT&T may slow down speed to keep everyone connected. Also, if you see a drop in service, or slow speeds, at a specific time, this could indicate another issue, like equipment around you emitting interference. It could also mean something on your device is causing issues.

We also want to go ahead and check for any outages in your area, so please provide us with the city and zip code so that we're able to confirm these details further.  In the meantime, also confirm with us the network signal strength you're receiving in the status bar, when making calls.

Let's make sure your cellular network settings are set up properly:

  • From the home screen, select the Settings app.
  • Select Cellular. To turn cellular data on or off, select the Cellular Data switch.

Note: To turn LTE data on or off select Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > desired option. Learn more from the Apple support article about cellular data settings and usage on your iPhone.

Give this information and steps a try then reach back out to let us know how this worked for you.

Thanks for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums!

Hi, thank you for responding @ATTHelp

I've looked through some of the stuff posted here and your response and here are a couple of things I've done:

  • Restarting my phone
  • Restarting cellular data
  • Turning off wi-fi calling
  • Toggled airplane mode on and off

I've tried these at different times of the day with full signal bars when calling. I'm in Atlanta 30305.

This is a really frustrating issue to deal with. I've also contacted the support via online chat where they mentioned that it would be fixed in a day or two. That was two full days ago. Please let me know if you know the cause of the issue and if it can be fixed.

Thank you for responding @zson0123.

We see that there are a few degraded towers in your area. The one closest to you is expected to be back to normal tomorrow evening, while the others are expected to be back online this weekend.

In the meantime, we'd suggest also trying to reset your network settings. To do this:

  • On iOS 15, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • If you're using iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Please let us know if that helps alleviate the matter for you.

Unfortunately, I have tried resetting the network settings too. I forgot to list it above.

@ATTHelp

I have basically this exact same issue. Started yesterday the 17th of March. My phone is an Unlocked iPhone 13 Pro Max not even a month old yet. Calls were working just a couple days ago.

I've done all the mentioned steps numerous times, and I have also used iOS's feature for converting to an eSIM to see if my physical SIM was the issue.

I've also updated my iOS software to the latest release. I see a lot of mention online of people having this issue with current gen phones where everything but phone calls is working. No official communication from ATT that I can see.

I have a feeling this is related to the fact that my phone is unlocked and pertains to ongoing efforts in retiring 3G having inadvertent effects on many customers.

Unlocked iPhone 13 should be the problem, I have an unlocked 13 and have no problem.  The problems some users are having is that AT&T has shut down their 3G network and their phones were using 3G to make phone calls. I did nave a problem with connecting to 5G with my phone until I replaced my SIM. I had converted my old SIM (iPhone 6) to eSIM.

Ok I did just convert my SIM yesterday to eSIM as mentioned above and that did not help at all. Even checked the SIM number and the 9/10 digits are above 27 which was referenced in some ATT documentation regarding SIMs that are going to be supported.

As far as I can tell all the technology, and firmware/software I have is as up to date as it can get.

Have you updated to IOS 15.4 yet?  This update has modem and carrier services update that may resolve your problem. I have set my Cellular Voice & Data to LTE in Cellular settings and only use 5G when needed.

Yep updated to iOS 15.4 yesterday. I'll see if I can set Cellular and voice to LTE and restart the phone. I did try that once, but not sure if it was before or after the update.
