Did you check the imei?
https://www.att.com/buy/byod/identify?devicetype=phone
Your phone has to be compatible with AT&T or you cannot use it and would have to replace it
Have you installed the SIM card and activated?

Porting a number?
Stuck? Explain where...

Hello, @ppena1964 ! Thanks for reaching out to us about your concerns with activating your prepaid service. We can help!
The information @formerlyknownas shared is absolutely correct.
Your service should work as soon as you activate the SIM. Please check to be sure you have a device compatible with our network. You can activate the SIM at the link provided above by @formerlyknownas, from the device itself, or by calling us at 877-426-0525 for automated instructions. You will need to know your SIM card & IMEI number for activation.
Before you activate your prepaid service: make sure your device has been charged and that the AT&T PREPAID SIM card has been inserted (some devices may have the SIM card pre-installed). Once charged, turn the phone on.
Note: If you do not have an AT&T PREPAID SIM card or already own a compatible phone and would like to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to AT&T PREPAID service, just purchase an AT&T PREPAID SIM Kit.
Here are the steps to activate your prepaid device! (at the top of the page you can change the device to match the device you are trying to activate and it will update to give you specific instructions for your device!)
Please let us know if you have any additional questions; if so, we'll be more than happy to assist.
Thank you for reaching out to our AT&T Community.
