A prepaid account is automatically closed if the account balance is $0 for more than 60 days after your service expires. To keep your number, you must keep a positive account balance or continue renewing your plan. To not pay for a plan you can’t use, change to a pay per use plan and refill your account with $100. A $100 refill is good for a year and will still be there to use when you return.

One thing to remember is that if you change to a pay per use plan, and put $100, as long as you return in time and start using your phone again you haven't really spent the money just to hold.  The money was just prepaid.
