GoPhone unlimited data -- no metering and no true unlimited high speed

hi folks,

It appears that ATT has recently implemented "unlimited" base (for example) 2.5 gb of data for Go Phone, after which the speed throttles back to 128kb of true unlimited.  Unfortunately, with that, they took away the true metering of the base, thus keeping customers guessing as to their real usage of data.  Neither through the online account, nor through the Android ATT app, one cannot see the real usage which is a real setback for one, monitoring their usage.

Is this -- metering of the data -- something that can be given back to customers?  I'd much rather not rely on the Android phone "Data Usage", if at all possible.

thx much,

Cosmin

We don't know. I suggest sending the request to customer service.

I called customer service about this, they pretty much just told me to not worry you have unlimited data now. I would guess they don't want us knowin how much we use so they can throttle at lower amounts.

I'm with you.  This is very annoying.  There's no way to see how much data I've used.  This is what shows up in the "usage summary" section of the website:

Going to plan details/packages gives me nothing.  It's really dumb.

I tried the data star code so many times that I fried my sim card so I guess that option will never be offered again.

Just keep a good counter app on your phone and remember to reset it when your plan renews and that date is getting harder to figure out because I don't get those text anymore.

yes, unfortunately the data star code does not work either.  ATT acknoledged the problem and said they're working on it (to provide the metering even in this tiered "unlimited" plan) but it is likely just a marketing ploy to have users chew up more data, unaware of usage, in the hope of upgrading to a higher plan.  just my $0.02.

Liz, I have called C.S. time and time again, with no resolution.  This should be an easy change, to provide metering, once again, but ATT won't have it that way -- at least, not for now.

I agree that the new "unlimited data plan" is limiting to me if ATT doesn't allow client to know how close to the new thresehold 3.5 level is before I'm slowed down to 3G.  I called (after waiting 30 minutes) and my client service agent had no clue what I was talking about.  The line is that since you now have the new "unlimited" plan, why do you need to know how much data you've consumed???  That is propesterous because once youve hit the 3.5 thresehold youre slowed down to a crawl.  It would be wise for me to know how close I'm at to 3.5 so that I can make my own decision to curtail usage till I hit a Wifi spot saving me fast speed data usage availability.  Truth is, I met the usage thresehold of 3.5 in leass than 4 days.

When I had the old 2.5 plan I never got slowed down- in fact I was happier then than now.

This is a bit of an aged thread, but I figured I'd post here, in case it helps someone else.

I am actually in a scenario that is a polar opposite from yours.  I had been on an unlimited family share plan with another carrier forever and, in order to lower my bill and gain access to the newest Note 4 and iPhone 6 at reasonable prices, I changed to a metered plan.

Not having lived under these constraints previously, and with my family being abhorrent data hogs, I was really freaked out that I may have set us up for failure with a 20G plan.

As a mitigating step, I took the time to do some homework and found a cross-platform app that brings carrier data consumption metering into focus for me.  The app is 'My Data Manager'.  It has iOS and Android flavors that work together seamlessly.

I mention it here as you might find that it works well for your metering needs.  I like it as I can track, by family member, who is consuming what.  It tracks not only carrier data, but also wifi consumption, and roaming consumption, if you choose to have it do so.

I (the Note 4 user) am on wifi when at work (at the home office) and when home, so I don't consume much carrier data at all (only when running to the store/etc.).  The dauther (one of my two iPhone users), on the other hand, lives in NYC (performing arts student) and is sucking down data from our carrier's towers quite a lot (i.e. when at class/the studio, on the subways, or walking, as everyone does in NYC).

The app lets you set up billing cycle start dates and depicts who is using what, as well as offering BillingPeriod-End consumption projections based on BillingPeriod-ToDate consumption rates:

When contrasted with my carrier's metering app (which I didn't know existed until last week), I can see that the tracking of consumption is reasonably accurate.  I see a small disparity between the two, in overall consumption, of about 120MB, but that could have been related to my setting the app up on the day of cycle start: https://www.dropbox.com/s/log3hg0wd8ncw4l/Screenshot_2015-01-14-19-56-46.jpg?dl=0

EDIT:  Now that I've looked at the screen shot, I am seeing where the carrier thinks we've hotspotted 120MB somewhere.  This explains the 120MB delta.  Something to keep an eye on, I guess...

In the end, I recommend that you take a peek at it, to see if it might help you to gain the fidelity needed on your mobile device data consumption (especially if using a shared plan across multiple devices).

Take care.

Thank you TM- my data has gotten worse.the ATT unlimited plan is a farce.I do not receive "unlimited data service".I have to rely on Wifi.I'm waiting to buy a Net 10 cellular phone and leaving ATT.The universe's largest corporation is stiffing me for my last penny and can't deliver what they promise. Its a shame that my tax dollars supported satellite communication research for ATT to dominate the industry with their corporate thievery of the public's resource.Cellular service should be free for all Americans who helped to support communications technology with their tax dollars...

Read the content of the above link carefully. Your data speed is throttled after 3 GBS ($50 plan). Roughly the service you are getting now.
You can pick the 5 GB plan, with service cost of $75 per month.
The prices are service only, you must buy your own phone.
