Canadian who visits USA twice per year wants to keep phone number active for months not used.

I am a Canadian who bought an AT&T SIM in Vegas in November.   I also bought a $30 card that I applied to that SIM.

That gives me 1 month phone access from that area.  I also visit Maui in February for 3 weeks.

How can I keep the Vegas phone number active for the months between my visits and use it again starting in February??

You have to continually put money in the account to keep the number active. If the account goes to $0 for 60 days, the account is closed and the number lost.

What is the minimum I can put in?  Can I keep it a 1$ that I put in each month prior to the monthly expiry date?

Hey there! We understand your concern, so let's get you the information you need.

If you are looking to refill your prepaid account on a monthly basis, you can go for our Prepaid 5gb plan at $30/mo. You will be getting unlimited talk, text and 5gb high-speed data, unlimited texts from the U.S. to over 230 countries, standard definition streaming, and unused data rolls over to the next month.

However, you can avail the 12-month Unlimited prepaid plan at $25/mo., if you prepay $300 for 12 months. The services will remain active through the year, and along with the benefits of the Prepaid 5gb plan, you will also receive 10gb of dedicated mobile hotspot data, and you will be able to make calls back to Canada and to Mexico from the U.S.

Hope this information helps, and do let us know if you have any other concerns or questions for us in the future.

Did you read my original comment above??

Thanks for your reply but WHY would anyone in their right mind WASTE $30 per month or $25 per month when they are NOT in the USA??

I tried using this phone number from Canada and it was useless!   I need to keep this phone number reserved so I can use it again 3 months from now in Maui.  That should NOT cost ANYONE $25 per month.

Hey there! We hear you, and we are here to provide the clarity you need.

While we understand your point, the cheapest prepaid plans are the ones mentioned above. Since the prepaid account will be suspended after 60 days of no balance in the account, you will need to go for one of the options mentioned above as we do not have any cheaper options available for prepaid.

Do let us know if you have any other concerns or questions for us in the future.

The $30 month plan does not work in Canada. The $30 plan does not roam for free in Mexico and Canada like the $40 plan does. The $40 plan and up would work for free all year round in and between Canada and USA.  There is no longer any restriction so a lot of people purchase the $40 plan or one of the unlimited AT&T plans and use it in the US and Canada all the time rather than buying service from a Canadian carrier which I've been told is expensive.

If you want to hold on to a US number, but not use it pay for it, it's not going to be all that cheap .

My advice is not AT&T but an AT&T MVNO. You can purchase red pocket mobile service for $5 a month.    Unlimited talk and text and half a gig of data.   You can increase to a plan with more data while you are in the United States.  It only cost you five bucks a month while you are not using it.

You just have to remember to change your plan when You are leaving the USA.

@HalATandT_Forum I've seen the suggestion to put $25 on the account.  The $25 lasts for 90 days before expiring, and reportedly the account won't close until the balance is $0 for 60 days.  So that would be long enough to last until February, where you can then add enough money to activate a monthly plan to allow you to use the number for the month you are in Hawaii.

Note, for the months without a plan, your phone won't be usable.
