Auto Payment Taking Out Different Amount Than Bill Total?

I have a prepaid account and am currently on the $45 monthly plan. I am also signed up for Autopay to receive the $5 discount.

This is my first month on Autopay and I noticed that instead of the $40.00 that my account screen was showing as due (which is what I would expect), my card was charged $42.26. Because there's no statement or paper bill provided, I cannot tell what the extra $2.26 is for. I don't have any outstanding charges or penalties, etc. on my account. When I log in to my account and check my payment history, it just shows that I've paid $40, instead of the $42.26 I was actually charged.

Anyone have an idea of what's going on? (In case it matters, I'm in the U.S. - California to be specific.)

The amount difference is probably taxes.  I hope this helps.

@bergsalot

That is correct.  Tax and 911 fees are added to all lines.

Thank you both. I didn’t realize that there would be taxes added on. There aren’t any added onto my internet bill, and when I was on a postpaid phone wireless account, I don’t think I had them, either. Are prepaid accounts just calculated differently?

At least now I won’t be surprised next month. Thanks again.

All lines have tax and 911 fees on pre and postpaid accounts.  Data is not taxed, so internet service is not, but TV is.  Your postpaid data plan is not, but line access is.

I see. Thank you for the info. This is my first time with a prepaid account so I'm still getting used to the differences.

I do wish AT&T would provide some kind of itemized bill like they do for postpaid accounts. I would like to be able to see the fees and total calculation, even if I already know where they're coming from. It also seems a bit inaccurate to have my Payment History show $40.00 when that's not the actual amount paid - not sure why they don't just enter the actual total.

Prepaid is very minimalist.
