ATT Prepaid No Network Overseas

My ATT prepaid (1 year contract which I signed up about a month ago)  is not working in Singapore. Network or SIM card error. The network icon on top right corner of the screen is simple a small x. The phone was working before I left the US. I have removed the SIM card and slotted it back and restarted the phone. 

While in Singapore, to log in US financial institutions, IRS, etc, I need to receive text message. The ATT contract says unlimited text from a list of 230 countries and Singapore is one of them. I am not sure if this is the reason but I read in another post that says the line must be active on ATT for at least 6 months but that was not written anywhere in the contract when I signed up.

That’s because AT&T prepaid doesn’t roam in Singapore.

The “230 countries” thing is for unlimited text FROM the U.S. TO one of the listed countries.

It’s not for roaming service when you are actually in those countries.

Thank you for your prompt reply! 

What I meant is that I need to receive text messages FROM the US (banks, IRS, etc) and not TO the US. I am not planning to call or text anyone in the US while I am overseas. ATT’s fine print says there is unlimited text From the US which I thought is exactly what I need. However I am not getting this part of the deal from ATT which I signed up for.

You are misinterpreting what the plan is.  To be more specific, it’s for you TO text another country while YOU and your phone are INSIDE the U.S. and connected to AT&T’s cell network.  It’s not for you to receive texts from the U.S. while you in are in Singapore.  Your phone needs to connect to a cell network to get texts from the U.S. and that can’t happen in Singapore because prepaid can’t roam there.  You are unable to connect to a network over there, so you can’t get texts sent to your US number.
