I have had an auto draft for AT&T for a while and I can't call to cancel it.

I have had an auto draft of my bank account to AT&T.  I want to cancel it, but AT&T can't find any account info in their system.  I have given all my personal info and they still can't find it.

I want to call and give my auto draft information so they can cancel, but every time I call customer service from my cell phone (only phone I have) I am disconnected because my cell service is from a reseller of AT&T and I can never speak to anyone no matter what route I take (saying nothing but 'agent').

Please can I get a number to call that won't hang up on me, or can I get some support via email?

Thanks

Tell the bank to cancel it

That is true, but I want to contact someone at AT&T to confirm that I have been paying for nothing and get a refund.

I call that number and go through the prompts for agent as I don't have the account number they are charging me for.  Before I got this cell phone I was able to call a few times and they were never able to find an account under my name, addresses, or SS#.  I wanted to try to escalate the issue to someone that could look up my bank account and routing number to confirm that this should have been cancelled years ago, but now my cell provider is a reseller of AT&T, so the automated assistance just says that the number I am calling from is resold, tells me to contact them, then hangs up.

To clarify, the issue I am trying to resolve has nothing to do with my cell phone.  It's just that since I don't have an account for them to look up, the auto assistant assumes I am calling about the number I am calling from (my resold cell number) and tells me to call them and hangs up.  I am simply needing to get in touch with someone that can take my bank account info, see the account it's tied to, confirm that it is an inactive account, and refund.

If you've never had service with AT&T, and thus never gave them permission to auto-draft your account, then what you have is identity theft and it should be treated as such.  You should talk to your bank, the police, the AT&T fraud department, etc.  Any money taken is your money and theoretically you are entitled to get it all back, though that may be difficult, because the person who impersonated you to give your auto-draft information is who owes it to you.

If you've in the past had service with AT&T and may have set up an auto-draft for that service, but no longer remember the account information, that's a different problem entirely.

Which of those is closer to your situation?

It's the 2nd.  I did have a landline with AT&T at my home many years ago.  Cancelled it many years ago.  When I continued to see a charge on my account, I assumed it was for a landline at my business.  Charge is for $59.99 so sounds like it would not be a business account.  After I closed the business and cancelled that account, I am still seeing the charge.  My guess is that it was for my home landline that (brace yourself) I cancelled over 10 years ago.  I deserve a lot of criticism for letting it go on this long, I realize.  But trying to get it resolved now.

I have a printout from the bank regarding the auto draft, so I have any info they would need to track the account, but just can't get anyone on my cell because of the reasons above.  Will see if I can contact them from someone else's phone I suppose if I don't get a reply here.  I think it could be taken care of over email.

If you're calling 800-288-2020, then you shouldn't be told you can't call; lots of people from different cell carriers have AT&T landlines.  if you're calling the Wireless support number from a Cricket phone, yeah, I'd expect a recorded message.

OTOH, 800-288-2020 is probably going to be zero help on a land line.

It's because I don't have a valid account number for them.  I was able to log in to the AT&T account for that old home line and give them that account number but they say it's inactive.

After calling back many times from my resold cell number and only saying 'agent', the automated assistant says they are going to connect me with an agent, then comes back with (paraphrasing) "Actually, we are showing the number you are calling from is resold through another party.  Contact them, goodbye."
