Can't receive calls on Landline

Our landline has only had a dial tone off and on for the past 4 days. When I try to call it from my cell phone there is just a crackling noise. This means that we can't receive any calls at all.

We can sometimes make outgoing calls, but the line is quite crackly. We've tried several "do-it-yourself" procedures and resets thanks to AT&T's automated help systems, but it remains the same.

Test from the NID and if bad there report it. I would guess the trouble is in the phone lines outside.

Thank you. Right now we have a dial tone but we can't receive calls. Callers just hear crackling.

That's a common problem with bad outside lines.

Thank you again. I can't get through to anyone at the moment, so I'm waiting for a call back. Last time they just suggested (via an automated system) that I reset our device. Not a lot of help so far. I wish I could just report an outage like you can with power companies.

Hmm. I just tried that. The automated message said "The number you have reached is no longer in service." Thanks anyway!

Well, it must have work too well so they got rid of it. You'll need to call the main number and say POTS line at the prompt, or if you get a choice of prompts select the one that says POTS or landline.  800-288-2020 unless your bill says a different number for repair service.

I think we might have a VOIP landline, not POTS, but what you suggested made something different happen. I'm talking to a real person for the first time in 3 days. :)

If it's plugged into a modem it is digital service. If resetting the modem didn't fix it the modem may be bad. The noise/static on the lines I was referring to doesn't happen on digital service, I just assumed you had POTS when you said you had static on the line when calling it.

They switched us from a regular landline to a fiber optic cable a few years ago. We've had pretty regular trouble since then, including several episodes of this crackling static sound and no dial tone. (?) The repair work that has been done in response has been hit or miss (50% success rate), but the administrative support has been abysmal. The person I'm talking to now is saying it's a "porting" problem in the system somewhere (not local to my property), so he's looking into it. (?) Again--thank you for your help! :)
