Unlisted phone number

I've been trying to get my mom's phone number changed to an unlisted number due to all the scammers and predators hounding her for money.  I have called at least 4 or 5 times with no luck even after the customer service rep says it's taken care of.  I've now asked for a supervisor and have been on hold now for 2 1/2 hrs.  The first call said it would take 30 min.  The second call said by the end of the day.  The 3rd call said it will take overnight.  This is my 4th call.

It won't do any good to change it to unlisted. Cell phones are unlisted yet they still get spam and telemarketing calls, which they control with spam blockers. I'm assuming this is a traditional landline, your best bet is to get a phone with a good call blocker. What makes you think it wasn't changed?

The AT & T customer service rep gave me a new phone number and said it was unlisted.  However, when I call the new number I get a recording stating the number is not in service.  It is traditional landline.  I've spoken to 4 different customer service reps and each one tells me something different.  So far they have given me 4 different new phone numbers for each time I call.  The old number is still active and none of the new numbers have been activated.  I can't understand how a company like AT & T can't take care of a simple request.  All they want to do is sell you something.

Personally I'd cancel all orders and get a phone with call blocking features that fits her needs. Like I said, unlisted or unpublished number will do no good with the technology these scammers use.
