Unwanted 4K recording

I have Illinois football and basketball set up to record. I set them up to record the team series or whatever it’s called. Well, it keeps recording my games in 4K when there is a 4K option. My problem is that I don’t have a 4K tv, and don’t want it recorded in 4K. How do I fix it.

Hi @katievolk,

We are happy to help.

First, are you using a 4K capable Genie DVR?  2nd, are you recording series from a 4K channel?  Please check your settings for default settings.

Hope this helps.

No I don’t have a 4K DVR or TV. I just subscribed to the Illinois basketball team. Which means every time Illinois basketball is on TV they record it. I have been doing so for years and I had no problems until this season. Also, I have no clue how to check my settings for default settings. I have NEVER changed a setting so I assume they are set to default. Let’s say 4 years ago (this is just an estimate) when I received my new DVR Genie I set it up to subscribe to Illinois football and basketball. I didn’t go to any channel and record a game and then tell it to record the series. Let’s say I went to FS1 and told it to record the Illinois Michigan basketball game and then told it to record series I would get every Illinois Michigan Basketball game on FS1 not every Illinois basketball game. So, I subscribed to Illinois basketball instead and it records every Illinois basketball game on all the channels.

Also when I check my series manger for Illinois basketball it has a 4K next to it. I never told it it record 4K and I spent over an hour trying to fix it.

I hope that all makes sense.

@katievolk.

Your Genie recording in 4k despite not having 4k equipment or the service itself is likely a bug. If you haven't already we'd recommend Refreshing your DIRECTV Equipment to resend channel authorizations, and then Restarting your Receiver to see if it continues to do that.

Let us know if this helps!

I have no 4k service, but the genie is probably capable of it.

So why does directv force 4k, so now I can't watch my recordings of live sports?  Or let me block the 4k channels.

Hello @dennis202009,

Let’s take a look at our 4K options,

Our 4K content is available to all customers at no additional cost as long as you have a 4k capable television and DirecTV receiver.

First we recommend setting up the recording using the Channel Guide, not Search. If you press the REC button on the remote while highlighting the desired program, the DVR will only record that channel.

You also mentioned wanting to be able to block the channels. You can block recordings through blocking TV ratings. You can follow the steps bellow to do so:

  • Press Info > Parental.
    • Use the Right/Left arrows to navigate list
  • Select Parental Controls.
    • Use the Up/Down arrows to navigate list
  • Select TV Ratings
    • If they have controls locked, they prompt o enter their password
  • Press Select on the highest rating to be allowed.
  • Press Select on the grid to fine tune content limits
  • Arrow Left, until Lock Now/Don't Lock is on screen
  • Select Lock Now and confirm passcode
    • If controls were already locked, they do not need re-enter their password
  • Press Exit button to return to watching TV

We hope this helps @dennis202009, please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
