Transfer dvr programs from DIRECTV to external flash drive

We are getting new dvr for our system.  I was told we could transfer our recorded programs to flash drive and then transfer to new dvr.  How do I do this and what kind of flash drive do I need?

Mine is not Direct TV dvr I use it with my camera to record outdoor activity and I need a recording from the dvr for a case coming up. How can I copy a recording to another source.

If you have DirecTV, then you would have a DirecTV DVR as they are proprietary and cannot use 3rd party DVRs. Recordings are encrypted to the DVR and may not be transferred. You could use A/V or component cables to record from the TV to a recordable DVD player or VCR the old fashion way.

However, if you are talking completely about non-DirecTV equipment, then you will need to check with the manufacturers of those devices as this is the forum for DirecTV.
