SD receiver with HD antenna

We keep our boat under cover where the KVH antenna does not work until we get out of the shed and underway. The marina has now installed a directv for all of the boats under cover. The recondition is now telling that because it is HD it will not work with my SD receivers. He wants me to get a new Directv account with new receivers that will not work with my antenna when I am away from the dock.

The question is can you use SD receivers with an HD antenna and if so, why can’t I use an A-B switch to choose the antenna to feed them.

Won't work with a modern SWM Slimline HD dish.

In theory an SD Receiver can work with an HD Dish, but it all depends on exactly which model SD Receiver you have and what type of satellite dish the marina has installed.  For example, an older D10 or D11 SD Receiver will not work with a modern Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM) dish setup.

That is until DTV shuts down the MPEG2 SD channels in April and renders the SD receivers and dishes obsolete.

April 2019 the remaining MPEG-2 feeds (SD only) shutdown. DirecTV had started a complimentary swap program for boxes that will be unusable once that happens.

What model is your box?

You should contact KVH to see if they will replace it as that will be obsolete in April as AFAIK that is a rebranded D10.
