Genie 2 DVR – Things To Know From AT&T
The Next Step In Entertainment!
To put it simply, the Genie 2 (HS17) is a high definition server. It is built to enhance the customer and DVR experience. It has a built-in Wi-Fi, built-in power inserter, and built-in Wireless Video Bridge. The G2 can support up to 7 receivers simultaneously, two of which can be 4K.
Note: When the Genie 2 is installed, non-compatible receivers will be replaced.
Some Of The Cool Features
11 Tuners – Record up to seven programs at once, all in HD
Full HD DVR Functionality
- Pause and rewind live TV or recorded shows in every room
- Record and delete shows in every room
- Mobile DVR
- Double Play
Genie Recommendations - Recommends shows you like and even has recording options for show that match your preferences.
Restart – start your favorite show from the beginning with one-click rewind.
TV Apps – Interactive, customized app like Facebook Gmail, Twitter, Flickr, Weather, and more. Some apps require an internet connection.

I have the HS17/100 Genie 2, installed in November 2017. Is this the latest version? If not, I request the newer version upgrade. I am a 18+Year DirecTV customer with the Total Protection Plan. Thank you.

Oh my ..... The floodgates will open with numerous complaints about the HS17 Genie Server. So many bugs. Hopefully this "announcement" means that things have been fixed?

Also not mentioned in this announcement ....
When you have an HS17 Genie Server, you CANNOT have any other DVR/Receiver models, only Genie Mini Clients. That means no extra Receiver if you're an RV'er. And you can't keep your existing your DVR/Receivers if you're upgrading. Thought everyone should know.

That would be Clients, not receivers. The Genie-2 Headless Server is the receiver itself which feeds the Clients.

Has 7 tuners. That is how it watch/record up to 7 programs/channels at the same time.
Big issue customers are not informed of by agents offering "upgrades"
Does NOT work with existing HD non-DVRs or HDDVRs, which are full receivers. A Genie with 2 HDDVRs is able to watch/record up to 9 channels (9 tuners). Additional receivers increases the tuners even more depending on the size of the household.
Recordings never transfer when replacing any DVR so existing recordings are lost.
Unlike the regular Genies (HR34, HR44, HR54) the Genie-2 does not have the Picture in Picture (PiP) feature.

The Genie-2 model is HS17. They system is brand new so that is the only model number at this time. Even if there was another generation, you can never request a specific model number. You get the next one from stock. The only exception is when you do a 4K upgrade, you are guaranteed a C61K (and if you are going with the regular Genie line a HR54), as that is the only model that supports 4K at the moment. You order wireless Mini Genie Client you get C41W as that was the only wireless model (though supposedly a C61W has started making an appearance).
The optional Equipment Protection Plan does not guarantee the "latest and greatest". Only that there is no charge for service calls, remote replacements, and delivery of receiver/clients. Two years from your last one, you are guaranteed a free "upgrade". An upgrade means you order a box of different level (non Genie to Genie, Client to HDDVR, regular HDDVR to Genie, etc.), or adding an additional TV, but not a specific model number you desire.
The Genie-2 has been buggy since national launch. With the 7 tuner restriction, which is a hard cap as forbids other receivers on the account (like HDDVRs), it is overly restrictive being a downgrade in design. Plus you reset it, power unplugged by accident, or down for any other reason then you lose all TVs as Clients have no tuners of their own so cannot work by themselves.

WORSE SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IS WITH DIRECT TV. YOU ARE FIXING TO LOOSE A CUSTOMER I WILL GO BACK TO DISH AND PAY 89.99 FOR 2 YRS AND 290+ CHANNELS.

If you have an issue with your service, then post your own thread (turning off caps lock) and perhaps other customers can assist you. This thread was a summary of the Gene-2 (HS17) capabilities. Some questions have been asked about that exact model, and I personally have even mentioned some corrections to the posted information so others are not steered wrong.

If you are referring to someone you are speaking to over the phone then request a supervisor if you feel they are being rude or need more training. You can even go to @ATTDIRECTVCare and send feedback by private message. We are other customers like yourself, so can provide guidance and solve many equipment and technical issues, even answer questions regarding programming, we do not work for DirecTV so cannot forward any feedback ourselves.
